{"id":274156,"date":"2023-06-14T12:10:06","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T11:10:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=274156"},"modified":"2023-06-14T12:10:06","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T11:10:06","slug":"abuja-therapist-arraigned-in-lagos-for-n275m-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/06\/14\/abuja-therapist-arraigned-in-lagos-for-n275m-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"Abuja therapist arraigned in Lagos for N275m scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Police arraigned Cecilia Agu, 40, an Abuja-based sex therapist, on Tuesday before a Federal High Court in Lagos State over an alleged N275m internet scam.<\/p>\n<p>The defendant is charged with five counts of conspiracy, forgery, fraud, and obtaining by false pretences.<\/p>\n<p>According to the police prosecutor, Samuel Eredia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/16\/kenyan-man-arraigned-in-court-for-setting-mothers-house-on-fire-over-food\/\">the defendant and others at large<\/a> committed the crime on February 20, 2023, in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State.<\/p>\n<p>Eredia said Agu defrauded one Babatunde Oyebode of N275m by sending an electronic message and misrepresenting herself that she would help him to verify, validate and authenticate his Instagram page with celebrities and other of his clients, which she did not do.<\/p>\n<p>However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge against her.<\/p>\n<p>Following her plea of not guilty, the prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant to a correctional centre.<\/p>\n<p>But the defendant\u2019s counsel, Elvis Asia, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/08\/20\/four-arrested-over-social-media-sex-scam-in-anambra\/\">the court that he would be praying<\/a> to the court for bail.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, Justice Daniel Osiagor granted the defendant bail in the sum of N10m with two sureties in like sum, among other conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The judge consequently remanded the defendant in the correctional centre pending when she is able to perfect her bail conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The case was adjourned till October 18 for trial.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Police arraigned Cecilia Agu, 40, an Abuja-based sex therapist, on Tuesday before a Federal High Court in Lagos State over an alleged N275m internet scam.
