{"id":274858,"date":"2023-06-17T18:16:42","date_gmt":"2023-06-17T17:16:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=274858"},"modified":"2023-06-17T18:16:42","modified_gmt":"2023-06-17T17:16:42","slug":"nafdac-urged-to-regulate-mode-of-processing-cow-hide-into-ponmo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/06\/17\/nafdac-urged-to-regulate-mode-of-processing-cow-hide-into-ponmo\/","title":{"rendered":"NAFDAC urged to regulate mode of processing cow hide into \u201cponmo\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Salami Akorede, a dietician, has asked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/20\/nafdac-impounds-120-tons-of-deadly-ponmo-in-lagos\/\">NAFDAC<\/a> to regulate the method of processing cowhide into <em>&#8220;ponmo&#8221;<\/em> for human consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Akorede works as the Director of Dietetics at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital in Ile-Ife, Osun.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ile-Ife that the popular method of burning cowhide on naked fire to produce <em>&#8220;ponmo&#8221;<\/em> was harmful to one&#8217;s health.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasized that the process of burning cowhide on naked fire made the product a potential source of cancer if consumed on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Where it is well processed, `ponmo\u2019 is a good source of protein, water, energy and micronutrients which contain fibre that aid digestion.<\/p>\n<p>In producing ponmo, processors should regulate the exposure of the cow hide to naked fire so as to minimize the formation of nitrates on them.<\/p>\n<p>Ponmo can also serve as alternative to meat as it is cheap and affordable. <strong>Dr Akorede said.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The dietician advised consumers to combine <em>&#8216;ponmo&#8217;<\/em> with other protein-rich sources such as meat, fish, crayfish, and soya balls to supplement their protein intake.<\/p>\n<p>He charged the federal government with lowering taxes on fish and chicken in order to make them more affordable as protein sources.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>More people should be encouraged to take to animal husbandry to reduce the in-take of ponmo, <strong>Akorede stated.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Salami Akorede, a dietician, has asked NAFDAC to regulate the method of processing cowhide into &#8220;ponmo&#8221; for human consumption.
