The Nigerian Medical Students Association has accused the management of Marina Resort in Calabar of negligence and incompetence in the wake of a boat mishap that involved its members <\/p>\n

Within Nigeria had reported how a boat conveying fourteen fun-seeking medical students from the resort to Oron beach in Akwa Ibom capsized<\/a>, while 11 persons were rescued three persons are still missing.<\/p>\n

The students had converged in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, for the annual NIMSA Health Week and, as part of the activities, decided to visit the resort, where some embarked on a boat cruise.<\/p>\n

However, the association said the resort handling of and reaction to the incident has left so much to be desired. <\/p>\n

The National President of the association, Ejim Clement Egba, said the incident has cast a dark cloud of despair over the medical students\u2019 community nationwide. <\/p>\n

Addressing newsmen at the premises of the resort, which houses the popular Slave History Museum, Egba said \u201cThis ugly, avoidable and extremely traumatizing incident causing so much anguish to the medical students\u2019 community nationwide was as a result of negligence, incompetence and the lackadaisical attitude of the crew members and the management of Marina Resort.\u201d<\/p>\n

He further explained that the engine of the boat had gone off, and water started to enter the boat at a rapid speed.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this point, the boat started sinking and finally capsized,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Egba added that factors that contributed to the mishap included a leaky boat, poor condition and integrity of the vests, poorly maintained engines resulting in the engine going off during the trip, fuel finishing before they got back to shore, little or no supervision by Marina Resort management as well as poor regulation and monitoring.<\/p>\n

According to him, the management of the resort was duly informed at which time they could have properly checked their boats and prepared them but failed to do so.<\/p>\n

The students are agitated that the management failed in their responsibilities to customers and ought to have been closed down.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
