{"id":276606,"date":"2023-06-27T08:08:20","date_gmt":"2023-06-27T07:08:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=276606"},"modified":"2023-06-27T08:08:20","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T07:08:20","slug":"subsidy-removal-palliative-fg-should-review-bank-charges-pension-deductions-osita-chidoka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/06\/27\/subsidy-removal-palliative-fg-should-review-bank-charges-pension-deductions-osita-chidoka\/","title":{"rendered":"Subsidy removal palliative: FG should review bank charges, pension deductions &#8211; Osita Chidoka"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former minister of aviation, Osita Chidoka has called on President Bola Tinubu to initiate steps for the removal of bank charges and reduction in the contributions to pension schemes.<\/p>\n<p>While speaking on Sunday via an interview with Channels Television said the aforementioned steps will serve as palliative to the sufferings of Nigerians over the removal of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/06\/03\/like-nigeria-angola-cuts-petrol-subsidy-to-promote-economic-growth\/\">petrol subsidy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that Tinubu on May 29 announced\u00a0an end to the payment of petrol subsidy by the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>Since the announcement, the price of petrol has increased to around N500 per litre.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the development, the former minister faulted the sudden removal of the petrol subsidy, saying the federal government was not quick to think about ways to ameliorate the impact of the policy on Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he took a decision to remove subsidy and he removed fuel subsidy and the fuel prices rose by over N500 in a day, what are the immediate measures that can be taken to make sure there is more cash in the pockets of people who go to work every day?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I was thinking with him, I would have said immediately \u2014 remove the charges for bank transfers in Nigeria, the N26 and the N56, cut it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat money goes to the banks and they are just enriching themselves; or make a flat rate of once a month, you can charge N100 for IT support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, that puts more money in the hands of people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecond, our pension scheme has accumulated a lot of money, and that pension scheme now requires people to pay 12 percent of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/06\/26\/gov-yusuf-stops-salaries-of-over-10000-workers-employed-by-ganduje\/\">salaries<\/a> from the employers\u2019 side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I think you can reduce the amount the people are contributing for a one-year period or six months to allow more money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat way, immediately from the next month\u2019s salary, another N10,000, N5,000 as the case may be, enters into the pocket of the people who go to work every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are able to pay their transport fare because they need to go to work tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former minister of aviation, Osita Chidoka has called on President Bola Tinubu to initiate steps for the removal of bank charges and reduction in the contributions to pension schemes.
