{"id":278268,"date":"2023-07-07T06:42:22","date_gmt":"2023-07-07T05:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=278268"},"modified":"2023-07-07T06:42:22","modified_gmt":"2023-07-07T05:42:22","slug":"fg-were-improving-tax-collection-not-imposing-new-taxes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/07\/fg-were-improving-tax-collection-not-imposing-new-taxes\/","title":{"rendered":"FG: We\u2019re improving tax collection NOT imposing new taxes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Special Adviser to the President on Revenue, Zaachaeus Adedeji has disclosed that the Federal Government has no intention to impose new taxes on Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>This was made known on Thursday by\u00a0Adedeji while speaking at a media briefing at the presidential villa, Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>He said rather than introduce new taxes, the government would ensure it improves collection of existing taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that\u00a0President Bola Tinubu signed four executive orders, including the suspension of the 5% excise tax on telecommunication services, as well as the excise duties escalation on locally manufactured products.<\/p>\n<div class=\"acss78078\">\n<p>Responding to a question on whether the president\u2019s action would affect the petroleum tax and if new taxes would be introduced, Adedeji said the intent of the president was to lighten tax burdens, harmonise and manage already existing taxes in the best interest of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/05\/fuel-subsidy-be-patient-with-tinubu-cleric-tells-nigerians\/\">Nigerians<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you rightly said that there\u2019s a plan or possibly proposal for petroleum tax, if you look at the current price templates, that has already been included, so this suspension has nothing to do with that. So the pricing structure that you have for PMS today, all those have been included, there\u2019s no new taxes that we\u2019re bringing in,\u201d the special adviser said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike my colleague has said, one of the key focus of this administration is to harmonise our taxes, the way we collect it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. President actually wants to simplify and make it friendly to business, the way we operate taxes in Nigeria. As we know, when we talk about the revenue management, it\u2019s not only in tax collection, the starting point is our economic policy because our aim is not to tax poverty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur aim is not to tax production. Our aim is to increase our productive activities, capacity to produce, then we can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/03\/economists-to-fg-introduce-tax-incentives-reduce-import-duty\/\">tax<\/a> our consumption and that is the direction of our economic planning and then we want to increase the trust that we have in the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have observed what has happened in the last months that we\u2019ve been here, we\u2019ve kept our words, part of what we are doing today, just to increase this trust that we\u2019re here to do what\u2019s best for the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLastly, we have a robust plan to improve our collection management and compliance management because that is what is needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we\u2019re not going to impose new taxes, it\u2019s the one that we have that we\u2019ll improve the collection, the management and the efficient use of those resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the pledge and promise of Mr. President, which we\u2019re here to make sure comes to reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Special Adviser to the President on Revenue, Zaachaeus Adedeji has disclosed that the Federal Government has no intention to impose new taxes on Nigerians.
