{"id":278501,"date":"2023-07-08T13:38:49","date_gmt":"2023-07-08T12:38:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=278501"},"modified":"2023-07-08T13:38:49","modified_gmt":"2023-07-08T12:38:49","slug":"i-didnt-break-any-law-by-marrying-14-year-old-girl-ex-zamfara-gov-yerima","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/08\/i-didnt-break-any-law-by-marrying-14-year-old-girl-ex-zamfara-gov-yerima\/","title":{"rendered":"I didn&#8217;t break any law by marrying 14-year-old girl  \u2013 Ex Zamfara gov, Yerima"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/08\/banditry-in-zamfara-not-connected-to-gold-mining-ex-gov-yerima\/\">Senator Ahmad Yerima<\/a> on Friday said the 14-year-old Egyptian girl he tied the nuptial knot with 13 years ago has come of age. <\/p>\n<p>This is as he defended his marriage to the minor, which sparked outrage within and outside Nigeria at the time, especially from human rights groups, when the news came to public knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>The outrage prompted a Senate probe \u2014 as a sitting senator at the time.<\/p>\n<p>However, Yerima who appeared on Channels Television\u2019s Politics Today, said he did not break any law by marrying the Egyptian girl, a minor at the time, as the states in the north did not pass the child right act into law. <\/p>\n<p>he also revealed that his bride was older and was in the process of obtaining a master\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, objected to her being 13, stating that she was \u201cAround that age: 14, 15.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yerima criticised the Child Rights Act (2003) and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (2015), saying whatever act is passed at the National Assembly has to be domesticated by the state assemblies. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd once they have not done that, it\u2019s no longer a law,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The former governor alleged that former President Olusegun Obasanjo \u201ctried to smuggle the Child Rights Act\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe passed it at the National Assembly through some manipulations but I don\u2019t think any state in the North domesticated it and passed it,\u201d Yerima said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked to share his views on whether children deserve the right to education and other freedoms enshrined in the Child Rights Act, he argued that marriage could not stop education. <\/p>\n<p>Yerima also noted that his daughter whom he had given away in marriage at the age of 16 \u201cis doing her PhD in London\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On the claim that he paid $100,000 as dowry for the Egyptian girl\u2019s hand in marriage, the former Zamfara governor noted that \u201cit\u2019s not dowry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained further that \u201call other things\u201d stipulated as conditions for the marriage were counted to arrive at that figure. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cProvision of the house, provision of dowry, the dresses that she has to wear, everything [in] total,\u201d he said. \u201cAt that time, it was just N15 million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One can give as much as is requested of them in marriage by Sharia Law, Yerima disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever you have to do in marriage is clearly stipulated under the Sharia Law.
