{"id":279025,"date":"2023-07-11T14:17:28","date_gmt":"2023-07-11T13:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=279025"},"modified":"2023-07-11T14:17:28","modified_gmt":"2023-07-11T13:17:28","slug":"theyre-agents-of-death-nafdac-warns-nigerians-against-patronising-drug-hawkers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/11\/theyre-agents-of-death-nafdac-warns-nigerians-against-patronising-drug-hawkers\/","title":{"rendered":"They&#8217;re agents of death \u2013 NAFDAC warns Nigerians against patronising drug hawkers"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>NAFDAC said most hawked drugs are substandard and expired<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Most drug hawkers are mules for narcotic medicines to criminal networks, says agency<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/07\/nafdac-raids-hawkers-outlets-seizes-n45m-products\/\">The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control<\/a> has described hawkers of drugs as merchants of death.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said most of the drugs sold on the streets by hawkers are counterfeit, substandard, and expired.<\/p>\n<p>The agency warned Nigerians against patronising drug hawkers, adding that they also worked as the major distributors and suppliers of narcotic medicines.<\/p>\n<p>The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye issued the warning on Tuesday at the official flag-off of the agency\u2019s media sensitisation workshop on the dangers of drug hawking and ripening of fruits with calcium carbides.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Adeyeye said drug hawking was a scourge that poses a serious challenge to the healthcare delivery system in the country, adding that the agency is determined to eradicate the illicit trade.<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u201cMany drug hawkers are knowingly or unknowingly merchants of death who expose essential and life-saving medicines to the vagaries of inclement weather which degrade the active ingredients of the medicine and turn them to poisons thus endangering human lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the drugs sold by the illiterate and semi-illiterate drug hawkers are counterfeit, substandard or expired, and therefore do not meet the quality, safety, and efficacy requirement of regulated medicines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrescription drugs are also sold by the itinerant drug hawkers who also hold consultation, recommend and prescribe medicines to their gullible patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to her, drug hawkers are also the major distributors and suppliers of narcotic medicines to criminal networks such as armed bandits, insurgents, kidnappers, and armed robbers.<\/p>\n<p>She said drug hawkers constitute a serious threat to national security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrugs are sensitive life-saving commodities which should not be sold on the streets, motor parks or open markets just like any other article of trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish to warn that any drug hawker arrested by NAFDAC will be prosecuted, will face a jail term, and our Enforcement Officers are currently carrying out synchronised nationwide operation.
