{"id":279236,"date":"2023-07-12T15:02:17","date_gmt":"2023-07-12T14:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=279236"},"modified":"2023-07-12T15:03:38","modified_gmt":"2023-07-12T14:03:38","slug":"breaking-tinubu-seeks-n500bn-for-palliatives-amid-fuel-subsidy-removal-writes-nass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/12\/breaking-tinubu-seeks-n500bn-for-palliatives-amid-fuel-subsidy-removal-writes-nass\/","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: Tinubu seeks N500bn for palliatives amid fuel subsidy removal, writes NASS"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>President Tinubu said fund is needed to cushion the impact of petrol subsidy removal on the citizens<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He disclosed that the fund will be drawn from the 2022 supplementary Appropriation Act of N819.5 billion<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He appealed to federal lawmakers to expedite consideration of request<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>President Bola Tinubu is looking at spending a whopping N500 billion on palliatives as citizens grapple with high cost of living and galloping inflation amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/11\/subsidy-removal-has-not-halted-fuel-smuggling-in-borders-customs\/\">subsidy removal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To this end, he has written to the National Assembly seeking an amendment to the 2022 supplementary appropriation Act.<\/p>\n<p>The president&#8217;s letter was read on the foor of the House of Representatives by the speaker of the lower legislative chamber, Tajudeen Abbas, during plenary on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>According to the, the amendment would allow the Federal Government to source N500 billion for palliative to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was titled: \u201cRequest for the amendment of the 2022 appropriation act\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Tinubu said the money would come from the 2022 supplementary Appropriation Act of N819.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI write to request the approval of the House of Representatives for an amendment of the 2022 appropriation act in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe request has become necessary in other to source for funds to provide necessary palliatives to cushion the effect of the recent removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sum of N500 billion only has been extracted from the 2022 appropriation act of N819.536 for the provision of palliatives to Nigerians to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal. I expect that the House will speedily consider the request,\u201d the letter read.<\/p>\n<p>The speaker said the lawmakers would consider Tinubu\u2019s request at plenary on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The President&#8217;s request is coming amid vociferous calls for measures to be put in place to ameliorate the hardship and suffering of the masses following the removal of subsidy by the president in
