{"id":280430,"date":"2023-07-21T08:21:01","date_gmt":"2023-07-21T07:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=280430"},"modified":"2023-07-21T08:21:01","modified_gmt":"2023-07-21T07:21:01","slug":"governors-should-consider-trimming-long-convoys-says-soludo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/21\/governors-should-consider-trimming-long-convoys-says-soludo\/","title":{"rendered":"Governors should consider trimming long convoys, says Soludo"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong><span class=\"acssf62a8\">Insensitive for state governors to be riding around town in convoys of \u201c20-something cars<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"acssf62a8\">Adhere to the austerity measures of the times and partake in the sacrifices being asked of the people<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Governor of Anambra state, Chukwuma Soludo has stated that members of the nation&#8217;s political class have been looking at themselves in the mirror, in the wake of the removal of subsidy on petrol.<\/p>\n<p>According to Soludo,<span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u00a0it has become insensitive for state governors to be riding around town in convoys of \u201c20-something cars\u201d for instance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This was made known by the governor while discussing with<span class=\"acssf62a8\"> state house correspondents, after the five-hour National Economic Council (NEC) meeting at<\/span><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u00a0the presidential villa in Abuja on Thursday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cI think it\u2019s an omnibus concept, and it\u2019s not something you sit down in a meeting to legislate for each and every state,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cBut the fact that the council recognises that this is an issue that each tier of government should now focus on as an area of concern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cThat we mustn\u2019t live\u2026even the cost of running the state, the way we even live, someone gave an example of a state governor going with 20-something vehicles in a convoy and all these have to be fuelled, and so on and so forth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">Soludo added that governors and members of council spoke to themselves about how everyone needs to adhere to the austerity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/05\/30\/fuel-subsidy-removal-put-palliative-measures-in-place-nlc-begs-tinubu\/\">measures<\/a> of the times and partake in the sacrifices being asked of the people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cAnd the fact that even amongst ourselves, almost like in a peer review kind of setting, we are talking to ourselves,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cHey gentlemen, we would need to be sensitive to the times, we need to live within the average of the people that we\u2019re governing and so on and so forth and knock off the waste and the irrelevancies so to speak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cI mean, I would like to give you a simple example. We are not going to legislate for everybody, everybody is to go and look into his mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cWhen I assumed office, for example, it was costing about\u00a0 N137 million every month to clean up public offices, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cToday, in Anambra we\u2019re doing N11 million a month from N137 million on a monthly basis, this is just an illustration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cIt\u2019s a thing that we\u2019re persuading each and every one of us to look into, that we should check our books and look ourselves in the mirror and move with the times.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cSo it is not that the council sat and began to prescribe, you have 12 number of advisors or five\u2026we didn\u2019t get to that but each person will do that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">He added that the council discussed the possibility of negotiating a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/06\/08\/fuel-subsidy-tuc-gives-tinubu-govt-deadline-on-new-minimum-wage\/\">minimum wage<\/a>, amid spiralling inflation and high cost of living.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">He said allocation to be shared among federating units for July will be around N900 billion and not N2 trillion, in order to
