{"id":281072,"date":"2023-07-25T15:41:19","date_gmt":"2023-07-25T14:41:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=281072"},"modified":"2023-07-25T15:41:19","modified_gmt":"2023-07-25T14:41:19","slug":"just-in-allow-nigerians-breathe-senate-tells-nerc-discos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/25\/just-in-allow-nigerians-breathe-senate-tells-nerc-discos\/","title":{"rendered":"JUST-IN: Allow Nigerians \u2018Breathe\u2019, Senate Tells  NERC, DisCos"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The Senate call on DisCos to allow communities recover cost of purchasing transformers before asking them to pay bills<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>Senate also called for prepaid meters for all electricity consumers at affordable rates.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>On Tuesday, the Senate requested the 11 Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to halt their proposed pricing increases and &#8220;allow Nigerians to breathe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/20\/suspend-tcns-tender-for-electricity-meters-senate-urges-fg\/\">Senate<\/a> encouraged DisCos to no longer charge Nigerian communities&#8217; electrical transformer purchase costs before requesting payment.<\/p>\n<p>By immediately distributing affordable prepaid metres to all power consumers nationwide, it also put an end to projected billing.<\/p>\n<p>The Red Chambers then considered several resolutions, including one titled &#8220;Need to halt proposed increase in Electricity Tariff by 11 successor Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The motion was moved by Senator Yunus Abiodun Akintunde (APC \u2013 Oyo Central) at plenary.<\/p>\n<p>After due debate on the motion, the Senate resolved to: \u201cCall on the Federal Government of Nigeria to intervene and halt the proposed increase in electricity tariff by the Distribution Companies (Discos);<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUrge Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to decentralize proposed engagement with Stakeholders scheduled for Abuja to the Six Geopolitical Zones of the Federation for effective participation by all;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso urge NERC to thoroughly look into the rate review applications filed by the Discos, taking into consideration the interests of citizens, affordability, and the need for improved service delivery;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurther urge NERC to explore alternative measures to address the financial challenges faced by the Discos, such as improving operational efficiency, reducing technical and commercial losses, and enhancing revenue collection mechanisms;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEqually urge Discos to henceforth discontinue estimated billing and make available to all electricity consumers prepaid meters at affordable prices; and<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMandate the Committee on Power (when constituted) to engage with the Federal Ministry of Power, NERC, and other stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the challenges facing the Nigerian electricity sector, including the need for comprehensive sector reforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall on DisCos to allow communities recover cost of purchasing transformers before asking them to pay bills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall on DisCos and NERC to allow Nigerians to breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senators Ekpenyong Asuquo, Jimikuta David, Ipalibo Harry Banigo and Abba Moro in their contributions supported the motion.<\/p>\n<p>Details Shortly\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate call on DisCos to allow communities recover cost of purchasing transformers before asking them to pay bills Senate also called for prepaid meters for all electricity consumers at affordable rates.
