{"id":281677,"date":"2023-07-30T08:51:35","date_gmt":"2023-07-30T07:51:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=281677"},"modified":"2023-07-30T08:51:35","modified_gmt":"2023-07-30T07:51:35","slug":"court-orders-banks-to-pay-nasarawa-pensioners-n1bn-gratuity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/30\/court-orders-banks-to-pay-nasarawa-pensioners-n1bn-gratuity\/","title":{"rendered":"Court Orders Banks To Pay Nasarawa Pensioners N1bn Gratuity"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Justice Essien dismissed two motions filed by the state government<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>The court also awarded N4 million cost against the state government<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>An industrial court has ordered three commercial banks where Nasarawa State government accounts are domiciled to immediately disburse over N1 billion to 170 pensioners as their gratuities.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Isaac Essien gave the order while ruling on a creditors\u2019 judgement case brought before the court against the Nasarawa State government by a group of retirees in Makurdi, Benue State.<\/p>\n<p>The court also awarded N4 million cost against the state government.<\/p>\n<p>A group of retirees under the aegis of Patriotic Local Government Pensioners Union had approached the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/29\/certificate-court-throws-out-nyscs-objection-to-governor-mbahs-n20b-suit\/\">court<\/a> seeking enforcement of a creditors\u2019 judgement case for the payment of their retirement benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Before ruling on the matter, Justice Essien dismissed two motions filed by the state government.<\/p>\n<p>He averred that the three commercial banks which were joined in the suit did not prove to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/07\/29\/terrorism-lagos-court-refuses-eze-ndigbo-bail\/\">court<\/a> why the garnishee order should not be enforced, hence the order to pay the amount into the account of counsel to the retirees for disbursement to them.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the Nasarawa State government violated the constitutional rights of the retirees over its failure to pay their entitlements.<\/p>\n<p>Counsel to the pensioners, Barrister Sunday Okpale, told journalists after the ruling that justice had finally prevailed for his clients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday I have been vindicated by this judgement.
