{"id":282341,"date":"2023-08-05T14:12:15","date_gmt":"2023-08-05T13:12:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=282341"},"modified":"2023-08-05T14:13:28","modified_gmt":"2023-08-05T13:13:28","slug":"its-disheartening-obi-bemoans-exit-of-glaxosmithkline-from-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/08\/05\/its-disheartening-obi-bemoans-exit-of-glaxosmithkline-from-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s disheartening \u2013 Obi bemoans exit of GlaxoSmithKline from Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The former Anambra state governor said that Nigeria is at a point where multinationals are leaving the country and the local ones are closing down<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>This, he said, were all results of poor management of our economy, as a result, millions are losing their jobs and our poverty index is worsening despite our already being the world poverty capital<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the February 25, Presidential election, Peter Obi, said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/08\/04\/after-over-50-years-of-operations-glaxosmithkline-shuts-down-in-nigeria-amid-economic-downturn\/\">exit of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)<\/a>, from Nigeria underscores the parlous state of the country&#8217;s economy.<\/p>\n<p>Obi, in a litany of tweets, Saturday, said he&#8217;s saddened by the Pharmaceutical giant departure from Nigeria after 51 years of operations.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the reason given by the company for leaving portends a bleak future for the country\u2019s investment climate.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cToday, I was saddened to hear that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), is exiting Nigeria after 51 years of operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir reason for leaving Nigeria is even more disheartening, that they are no longer perceiving any future growth of the country, which will be anchored on productivity.<\/p>\n<p>The former Anambra state governor, equally said its that we\u2019re at the point in our nation\u2019s journey where multinationals are leaving the country and the local ones are closing down.<\/p>\n<p>This, he said, were all consequences of poor management of our economy, as a result, millions are losing their jobs and our poverty index is worsening despite our already being the world poverty capital.<\/p>\n<p>Obi also said, \u201cThese multinationals leaving our country, not only create jobs but create immeasurable training that contributes immensely to our human capital development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGSK which has a manufacturing facility set up in Agbara, on over 25 hectares of land in Agbara, had directly employed over 400 highly technical workers like pharmacists, microbiologists, biochemists, chemists, dentists, doctors etc, and also employed over 1000 other staff. It indirectly provided jobs and business opportunities for thousands of Nigerians across the nation. They are now leaving all these behind, and pushing more people back into unemployment\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The LP standard bearer recalled his consistent position that \u201cin turning our nation around, we must move the economy from consumption to production, part of which included encouraging and supporting local and foreign investments, like GSK, in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Obi also stressed the importance of creating an environment that creates and sustains multinationals to invest in our country is key to our dream of greatness.
