{"id":283867,"date":"2023-08-16T06:15:04","date_gmt":"2023-08-16T05:15:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=283867"},"modified":"2023-08-16T06:16:03","modified_gmt":"2023-08-16T05:16:03","slug":"removal-of-all-eyes-on-judiciary-billboards-attack-on-free-speech-atiku","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/08\/16\/removal-of-all-eyes-on-judiciary-billboards-attack-on-free-speech-atiku\/","title":{"rendered":"Removal of \u2018All eyes on judiciary\u2019 billboards attack on free speech \u2013 Atiku"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Shaibu said those behind the advert did not do anything wrong<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He noted that destroying billboards would not automatically shift attention away from the judiciary<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Former Vice President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/08\/11\/presidential-election-atiku-planning-to-contest-again-in-2027\/\">Atiku Abubakar<\/a>, has decried the removal of some billboards warning against the subversion of justice by judges of the appeal court.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking through Phrank Shaibu, his aide on communications, Atiku said the removal of the billboards across the country is an assault on freedom of speech.<\/p>\n<p>The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) had ordered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/08\/15\/fg-suspends-asp-boss-dissolves-advertising-body-over-all-eyes-on-the-judiciary-billboards\/\">the removal of \u201cAll Eyes on the judiciary\u201d billboards<\/a> sponsored by a group known as the Diaspora\u2019s for Good Governance.<\/p>\n<p>The advertisements were put up as the presidential election tribunal prepares to deliver its verdict on the petitions challenging the victory of President Bola Tinubu in the general election.<\/p>\n<p>ARCON also dissolved its Advertising Standards Panel for approving billboards targeted at the presidential election petition tribunal.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Tuesday, Shaibu said those behind the advert did not do anything wrong.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that destroying billboards would not automatically shift attention away from the judiciary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe basic principle of social justice is about the people. The advertisers of the billboards only did what the norm is in civilized climes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the agents working to impress an interest that read meanings to that innocuous advert. Otherwise, it is a basic principle that eyes must be on the wheel of justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEyes must naturally be on the wheel of justice because when justice is delivered, it must be seen to have been just!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn any case, both Tinubu and the APC are before the same court. It is curious how they find this particular message upsetting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyway, even if they pull down the billboards, they can never stop all eyes from being on the judiciary at this historic time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBillboards are used in displaying educational messages.
