{"id":284671,"date":"2023-08-21T06:40:58","date_gmt":"2023-08-21T05:40:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=284671"},"modified":"2023-08-21T06:40:58","modified_gmt":"2023-08-21T05:40:58","slug":"naptip-unwillingness-to-prosecute-convicts-hindering-fight-against-trafficking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/08\/21\/naptip-unwillingness-to-prosecute-convicts-hindering-fight-against-trafficking\/","title":{"rendered":"NAPTIP: Unwillingness To Prosecute Convicts Hindering Fight Against Trafficking"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>NAPTIP advises human trafficking victims to file civil charges against convicted traffickers to seek restitution and damages<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A stakeholders&#8217; meeting organized by JDPCI in Edo State discusses the establishment of a Victims Trust Fund committee to assist trafficking victims<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/24\/human-trafficking-in-nigeria-increasing-naptip\/\">National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP)<\/a> has advised victims of human trafficking to file civil charges against convicted traffickers in order to seek restitution.<\/p>\n<p>Nduka Nwanwene, the agency&#8217;s commander in Edo State, made the remarks at a stakeholders&#8217; meeting organized by the Justice Development, Peace, and Caritas Initiative (JDPCI) in Benin, the state capital.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting centred on the establishment of a Victims Trust Fund committee in the state to assist victims of human trafficking.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There is a provision in the law in, that victims can take their traffickers to Court on civil claim to claim damages if they are exploited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NAPTIP is concerned with the crime aspect of\u00a0 trafficking. When a trafficker is convicted, it doesn\u2019t prevent the victim from taking the trafficker to court and making civil claim and damages, <strong>he said.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He said such development would aid the fight against human trafficking as the traffickers have been pushed roundly and suffered punishment with the conviction and would also be made to pay some funds for having exploited the victim.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This\u00a0 will send a clear message that if a trafficker has been convicted, the victim can still go to court to claim damages for the Trafficking and\u00a0 when convicted, the victim can claim damages of N5 and N10 million, it would go a long way in rehabilitating the victim.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On his part, JDPCI\u2019s Executive Director in Uromi, Rev. Fr. Fidelis Arhedo, charged the Edo government to activate the\u00a0 Victim Trust Fund Committee to help take care of victims of human trafficking in the state.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The fund is meant for victims and\u00a0 survival of human trafficking, it is for those who were trafficked, exploited and battered and return with nothing and need to be assisted to live\u00a0 a good life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>He said;<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If the committee is set up and functional, it will help reduce the financial burden on the state government in taking care of victims of human trafficking.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>He said;<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Edo State Government in 2018 assented to an Act that created Edo Taskforce Against Human Trafficking and this taskforce, has different components on what to do. One of the components is to establish a Victim Trust Fund.<\/p>\n<p>And the VTF is where the Edo state government itself will contribute resources to that fund including international, local and individuals can contribute to that fund.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He expressed fear that if the state government fails to inaugurate the committee, there is the possibility that the next government may
