The new Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has replied critics who questioned his ability to deliver, insisting he mustn\u2019t be a footballer to provide leadership for the sports sector.<\/p>\n
Stakeholders in the sector expressed shock at the appointment of the 57-year-old by President Bola Tinubu last Wednesday, saying Enoh, a farmer and politician, had no connection with sports.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do not think that you need to be an active participant, that you need to be either a footballer or this or that for you to be Minister of Sports Development, I do not think so,\u201d Enoh said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think what is required is who can provide leadership, who can provide direction, who can be transparent, who can understand this sector, and there is no how that anybody appointed here will not try to understand this sector.\u201d<\/p>\n
Enoh added that being a footballer didn\u2019t directly translate to effective leadership in sports.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf it\u2019s about playing football or taking part in sports, I was a footballer and my schoolmates that are still in touch with me have sent messages to remind me of my playing days, after my appointment.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not about that really, I could be that footballer and can\u2019t provide leadership and I\u2019m not sure that\u2019s what you\u2019re looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n
Enoh added that he wasn\u2019t surprised that the media focused on his farming business.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen some people drew my attention, they said I should respond to what was written in the media, \u2018that he is a farmer turned sports minister and all that. \u2018And I said, \u2018Well, in my profile, you\u2019re going to find that I\u2019m a politician, I\u2019m a teacher, I\u2019m a farmer and I\u2019m a philanthropist, so the media is free to just pick farming and blow it, isn\u2019t it?\u2019 But I also said, \u2018Are they not correct? How much do you know about me in terms of the sports sector?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, they are correct to write what they write, but now that I\u2019m sworn in, the media will then begin to know who I am, and my hope is that it will be for a good purpose, that together we can make a difference in this sector that excites Nigerians,\u201d the Cross River-born politician added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
