{"id":285247,"date":"2023-08-23T22:21:02","date_gmt":"2023-08-23T21:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=285247"},"modified":"2023-08-23T22:21:02","modified_gmt":"2023-08-23T21:21:02","slug":"wike-speaks-on-n300-million-official-car","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/08\/23\/wike-speaks-on-n300-million-official-car\/","title":{"rendered":"Wike speaks on N300 million official car"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Says people should be careful not to destroy other people<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><strong>I have not used any official bulletproof car, Wike clears air<\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has refuted claims of purchasing a N300 million Armoured Lexus LX600 SUV on the assumption of office.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Wike made the rebuttal shortly after a visit to Metro Train Station, Abuja, on Wednesday to inspect the ongoing rehabilitation of the Abuja Rail Mass Transport System.<\/p>\n<p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some sections of the media had published a picture of an Armored Lexus SUV model LX 600 fitted with \u2018FCT \u2013 01\u2019 plate.<\/p>\n<p>The reports claimed that the SUV, which cost more than N300 million, belonged to the new FCT Minister, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/08\/23\/tinubu-broke-jinx-by-appointing-wike-fct-minister-oshiomhole\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mr Wike<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Wike refuted the claim, describing it as mere \u201cmischief\u201d, stressing that he was sworn in on Monday and had not even sat down to work yet.<\/p>\n<p>He said that all he did was interact with staff, and today (Wednesday), went to the Metro Train Station, Abuja, with the Minister of State for FCT to see things for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are now going back to the office to interact with each of the departments in the Federal Capital Territory Administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I have seen what is going on in the social media, how the FCTA Permanent Secretary bought a bulletproof car of N300 million that I am using.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I want you people to go hit your hand there (on the car) and see whether it is a treated car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith all due respect, people should be careful not to destroy other people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that when he resumed, the Permanent Secretary, Adesola Olusade, had told him that the FCTA has cars that the ministers would use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the car we use is this (pointing at a regular Lexus SUV).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never approved for any car to be bought, and I have not used any official bulletproof car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not using a bulletproof car as FCT Minister, so we should report the right thing and not destroy ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to take a look at the car I came with, the one with the flag and see whether it is a bulletproof car\u201d, he asked the journalists at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>In a related development, the Director Press, Office of the Minister, Anthony Ogunleye, dismissed claims by some media outfits that Mr Wike plans to demolish 6,000 houses across 30 settlements in Abuja, including Wadata Plaza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would like to categorically state that these stories are entirely false and without any basis,\u201d Mr Ogunleye said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the story on the demolition of 6,000 houses was reported by a national daily on 22 August, with the caption \u201cAbuja land: FG may revoke land allocations, demolish 6000 buildings, slums\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added that another mainstream newspaper also published what he described as an \u201cirritating story\u201d with a caption, \u201cWadata Plaza will go down, Reactions trail Wike\u2019s demolition threat\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the avoidance of doubt, the minister did not in any of his pronouncements list the areas or the number of illegal houses to be removed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather, his emphasis has always been that illegal settlements and structures would be removed for the greater good of the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEqually vexing\u201d is the headline from a reputable broadcast station saying, \u201cI will fix Abuja in six days,\u201d and attributed the same to the FCT minister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wish to state quite clearly that at no time did the Honourable Minister say this or allude to this phrase in any way.
