{"id":288242,"date":"2023-09-11T08:10:23","date_gmt":"2023-09-11T07:10:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=288242"},"modified":"2023-09-11T08:10:23","modified_gmt":"2023-09-11T07:10:23","slug":"pept-judgment-nigerias-sovereignty-hangs-in-balance-democracy-on-edge-catholic-bishops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/09\/11\/pept-judgment-nigerias-sovereignty-hangs-in-balance-democracy-on-edge-catholic-bishops\/","title":{"rendered":"PEPT judgment: Nigeria&#8217;s sovereignty hangs in balance, democracy on edge \u2013 Catholic Bishops"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>CBCN assertion is coming amid the controversy that is trailing the judgment of the Tribunal<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The ecumenical association noted that Nigeria currently stands on the cusp of uncertainty as the case moves to the Supreme Court<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, has asserted that the judgement of the Presidential Elections Petitions Tribunal, PEPT, leaves so much to be desired.<\/p>\n<p>CBCN assertion is coming amid the controversy that is trailing the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/09\/06\/breaking-tribunal-affirms-tinubus-presidential-election-victory-dismisses-atiku-obis-petitions\/\">judgment of the Tribunal<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The ecumenical association noted that Nigeria currently stands on the cusp of uncertainty as the case moves to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>The President of the Conference, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, made this known while addressing the opening ceremony of the 2023 Second Plenary Assembly of the CBCN in Abuja yesterday,<\/p>\n<p>He stated that the conduct of the elections fell short of people\u2019s legitimate expectations and moral and legal standards.<\/p>\n<p>He underscored the dismissive approach of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, PEPT, towards the petitions filed by aggrieved contestants.<\/p>\n<p>The Catholic Bishops stated: \u201cAfter hearing their petitions, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, PEPT, delivered its ruling in a marathon judgement on September 6, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe five justices of the Election Petition Tribunal unanimously dismissed the petitions. According to them, they lacked merit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the billions of naira of tax-payers money appropriated for the provision of the BVAS technology as a game-changer in our general elections, the judges in their ruling tried, among other things, to suggest that it was wrong to expect INEC to keep its promise or obey the electoral regulation of transmitting election results electronically in real time from polling units.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile respecting the views of the judges, two of the petitioners rejected their verdict as lacking in justice and so have decided to head to the Supreme Court to seek justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs this case moves to the next level, the fate of the country continues to hang in the balance and the future of democracy in our land stands on the edge of a precipice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pray and hope that the Supreme Court judges will neither bend the law nor seek to satisfy the whims and caprices of any party. We also pray and hope for a day in our nation when all election results will be finally decided at the polling units and not at the
