{"id":290781,"date":"2023-09-26T22:40:16","date_gmt":"2023-09-26T21:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=290781"},"modified":"2023-09-26T22:40:16","modified_gmt":"2023-09-26T21:40:16","slug":"police-release-woman-arrested-over-social-media-comment-on-tomato-paste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/09\/26\/police-release-woman-arrested-over-social-media-comment-on-tomato-paste\/","title":{"rendered":"Police release woman arrested over social media comment on tomato paste"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>In the post by Ms Okoli she said Nagiko tomato paste tasted surgary<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>She was arrested thereafter her post<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Lawyer, Amnesty International called for her release<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Nigerian police have released a woman arrested for claiming that a tomato paste she bought in a market tasted sugary.<\/p>\n<p>The paste, Nagiko tomato mix, is manufactured by Erisco Foods Limited, Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>The woman, Chioma Okoli, made the comment in a post on her Facebook page on 17 September.<\/p>\n<p>She goes by the name, Chioma Egodi Jnr, on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>In the post seen by WITHIN NIGERIA, Ms Okoli said she had gone to the market on 16 September with the intention of buying Gino or Sonia brand of tomato paste but could not find them.<\/p>\n<p>She said she later bought the Nagiko tomato mix which she had planned to use in making stew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I opened it, I decided to taste it, Omo! Sugar is just too much!\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>In the post, she urged other Facebook users to confirm if they had used the product before, apparently to ascertain if they had similar experiences.<\/p>\n<p>It would be recalled that Ms Okoli was arrested on Sunday by operatives of police operatives in Lagos State, South-west Nigeria and transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Okoli\u2019s arrest was instigated by the manufacturer of the tomato paste, Erisco Foods Limited, who accused her of intentionally making the post \u201cto mislead our esteemed customers and discredit\u201d the company\u2019s image.<\/p>\n<p>The Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Babatunde Irukera, on Tuesday, announced that Ms Okoli had been released on bail by the police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurther Update: Ms Chioma has been released on bail. Mutual commitments by both parties before the police,\u201d Mr Irukera wrote on his X handle.<\/p>\n<p>He said although the FCCPC was not a party to the commitments, the commission would continue investigation into the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrateful for restoration of Ms Egodi\u2019s liberty, but determined to ensure we never walk this path again,\u201d the FCCPC chief wrote in another post on the microblogging site, minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCriminality in commerce is an exception. Our society cannot endure under the threat or fear that fair expressions, when properly so, can become the subject of law enforcement,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>After the arrest of Ms Okoli became public on Monday, Nigerians criticised the company and the police for their action.<\/p>\n<p>A human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, in a post via his X handle on Monday, said the company\u2019s management \u201cacted viciously and irresponsibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Effiong stressed that the company ought to have issued a public statement or even reached out to the woman to understand her view and explain their position if they disagreed with her review.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would have earned the company and the brand more patronage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer criticised the police over the arrest, and said it was unfortunate that the police had \u201crefused to reform itself\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said it is upsetting that \u201cany charlatan\u201d in the country can easily weaponise the police, whom he said have continued to criminalise civil disputes in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot continue like this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Amnesty International Nigeria, earlier on Tuesday, demanded the \u2018immediate\u2019 release of Ms Okoli, maintaining that \u201cno one should be arrested simply for exercising their freedom of expression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a series of posts on its X handle, the group asked Nigerian authorities to \u201cimmediately and unconditionally\u201d release her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe arrest of Chioma Egodi shows that, despite the authorities paying lip service to police reforms, impunity for unlawful arrests remains rampant,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the post by Ms Okoli she said Nagiko tomato paste tasted surgary She was arrested thereafter her post Lawyer, Amnesty International called for her release The Nigerian police have released a woman arrested for claiming that a tomato paste she bought in a market tasted sugary.
