{"id":290823,"date":"2023-09-27T08:10:27","date_gmt":"2023-09-27T07:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=290823"},"modified":"2023-09-27T08:10:27","modified_gmt":"2023-09-27T07:10:27","slug":"cardoso-rolls-out-plans-to-stabilise-fx-market-tackle-inflation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/09\/27\/cardoso-rolls-out-plans-to-stabilise-fx-market-tackle-inflation\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardoso rolls out plans to stabilise FX market, tackle inflation"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Cardoso revealed how he will stabilise the country\u2019s foreign exchange (FX) market and slow inflation<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nigeria\u2019s FX market has been beset by devastating volatility since the beginning of the current government led by President Bola Tinubu<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Olayemi Cardoso, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has revealed his plans to tackle some macroeconomic challenges that plague Nigeria and stunting its growth.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Tuesday during his screening by the senate, Cardoso revealed how he will stabilise the country\u2019s foreign exchange (FX) market and slow inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria\u2019s FX market has been beset by devastating volatility since the beginning of the current government led by President Bola Tinubu.<\/p>\n<p>The gain the local currency recorded on Monday was quickly eroded on Tuesday when the naira fell to an all-time low of N1,000 to the dollar.<\/p>\n<p>The CBN governor said if they are confirmed, the immediate plan to stablise the naira would be for the apex bank to settle some financial obligations and make \u201ctransparent rules\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNumber one is what I will term an \u2018operational issue\u2019. Right now we have a situation where \u2013 we are aware that there are unsettled obligations by the CBN,\u201d Cardoso said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether it is 4 billion, 5 billion or 7 billion I don\u2019t know but definitely the immediate priority will be to verify the authenticity and extent of what is owed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNumber two, apart from the operational there is one that is system related that involves ensuring that we come up with rules that are open, transparent that any of the players in that area understands. We can expect foreign investors, portfolio investors \u2013 we can\u2019t expect them if there is no open transparent system that everyone understands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn setting up those guidelines one will carry the relevant stakeholders along and the comment was made earlier that one should be ready to engage everybody and hear views.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith those two things, though they may seem simple, will go a long way to ease up the restrictions we are having on people that want to come in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cardoso also said to tackle the country\u2019s inflation, the CBN would roll out evidence-based policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be a need to significantly revamp the infrastructure in the CBN with respect to data. We will ensure that our data gathering capacity is significantly enhanced that is key in measuring your inflation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that avoiding deficit financing would tackle money
