{"id":293977,"date":"2023-10-19T23:17:40","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T22:17:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=293977"},"modified":"2023-10-19T23:17:40","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T22:17:40","slug":"no-teacher-should-earn-less-than-n250k-monthly-reps-call-for-salary-increment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/10\/19\/no-teacher-should-earn-less-than-n250k-monthly-reps-call-for-salary-increment\/","title":{"rendered":"No Teacher Should Earn Less Than N250k Monthly &#8211; Reps Call For Salary Increment"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>A lawmaker, Abubakar Fulata, has called for salary increments for primary and secondary teachers and university lecturers<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>The policy stipulates that no primary, secondary, or university teacher should earn less than N250,000, N500,000, or N1 million per month.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has called for salary increments for primary, secondary and university teachers.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairman of the committee, Abubakar Fulata, made the call on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He proposed N250,000, N500,000 and N1 million monthly salary, respectively, for primary, secondary and university teachers.<\/p>\n<p>Fulata spoke at a One-Day National Stakeholders\u2019 Workshop on the Development of a Roadmap for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/10\/19\/nigeria-governors-forum-chairman-seeks-20-budget-allocation-for-education\/\">Nigerian Education Sector<\/a> (2023-2027), in Abuja, on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Fulata said that it is important to encourage Nigerian teachers by paying them adequately.<\/p>\n<p>He also stressed the need to translate all subject textbooks into local languages so as to catch up with the world.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, efforts by past administrations to address challenges in the education sector did not yield the desired results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a thing of concern that for decades, several efforts on policies made by successive governments to resuscitate and improve the education sector and those efforts have continued to create very little progress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll over the world, the subject of the language of instruction has always been the local language of those countries.<\/p>\n<p>If you go to the UK, education is taught in English. If you go to France, education from the basic level up to the tertiary level is taught in French.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is in Nigeria that you teach the language of instruction in English. Our problem has always been that we are teaching our children subjects they ought to have been taught in their local language.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll Mathematical, Physics, Chemistry textbooks and what have you should be in our local languages. There is no way we can catch up with the world if we continue teaching our children in a foreign language.<\/p>\n<p>No primary school teacher should earn less than N250,000 in a month, no secondary school teacher should earn less than N500,000 and no university teacher should earn less than N1 million in a month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nation must declare a state of emergency in education.
