{"id":29578,"date":"2021-05-04T16:18:05","date_gmt":"2021-05-04T15:18:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=29578"},"modified":"2021-05-04T16:18:05","modified_gmt":"2021-05-04T15:18:05","slug":"atiku-calls-for-total-war-on-terror-asks-fg-to-recall-ex-soldiers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/04\/atiku-calls-for-total-war-on-terror-asks-fg-to-recall-ex-soldiers\/","title":{"rendered":"Atiku calls for &#8216;total war&#8217; on terror, asks FG to recall ex-soldiers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria&#8217;s vice-president, Atiku Abubakar has requested the federal government to recall and mobilise all ex-soldiers who are willing to join the fight against insurgency.<\/p>\n<p>The former vice-president, Abubakar in a series of tweets on Tuesday said\u00a0the security situation in the country keeps worsening and Nigerians are living in fear.<\/p>\n<p>He said no part of the country \u2014 including farms, markets, schools, homes, churches, mosques \u2014 is safe<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerrorists are spreading their areas of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/04\/46-year-old-woman-dies-after-undergoing-bum-lift-operation-at-a-backstreet-clinic-in-brazil\/\">operation<\/a> beyond the Northeast, into far-flung areas as far as Niger State in the North-Central. That is merely hours from our Federal Capital,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow is the time for decisive leadership and I call on the Federal Government to consider recalling all ex-servicemen and women, who are willing to return to service, and take the fight to the insurgents until they are rolled back and defeated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a former vice-chairman of the National Security Council, I am aware that Nigeria has a sizeable population of military veterans, who are alive, and were trained locally and internationally, and it serves no purpose to allow these valuable national assets lie fallow when there is an existential threat to our nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall them up. Immediately. Mobilise them to the field. The time has come for us to put in all our effort and stamp out this menace from our nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe men and women of Nigeria\u2019s armed forces, whether serving or retired, who restored peace to Lebanon, Liberia, Sierra Leone and S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 and Pr\u00edncipe can and should be used to do the same in the motherland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He asked the federal government to look for an efficient way of sourcing for and delivering arms and ammunition to the troops at the battlefront.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA situation where terrorists and criminals are better armed than our troops on the battlefront is intolerable. We need to urgently improve the conditions of service of the men and women of our armed forces. And not just the government,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the welfare of the armed forces, he advised that the troops should be properly rewarded as this would boost their morale and encourage them to fight valiantly.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cThe Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, working in concert with primary mortgage institutions, ought to offer the men and women of our armed forces special concessionary mortgage loans so they can own homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe private sector should also be encouraged to offer discounted services to them in appreciation of their services. There is no sacrifice greater than to lay down your life for the motherland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen our military is properly rewarded, they will fight more valiantly and gallantly.
