{"id":297206,"date":"2023-11-14T20:08:18","date_gmt":"2023-11-14T19:08:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=297206"},"modified":"2023-11-14T20:08:18","modified_gmt":"2023-11-14T19:08:18","slug":"old-naira-notes-remain-legal-tender-indefinitely-cbn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/11\/14\/old-naira-notes-remain-legal-tender-indefinitely-cbn\/","title":{"rendered":"Old naira notes remain legal tender indefinitely \u2013 CBN"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Says decision is line with international best practices and to forestall a repeat of earlier experiences implementing the policy<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Central Bank of Nigeria has extended the validity of the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes indefinitely .<\/p>\n<p>The apex bank\u2019s Director, Corporate Communications, Isa AbdulMumin in a statement titled, \u201cCBN To Allow Old Design Naira Banknotes As Legal Tender, Ad Infinitum\u201d on Tuesday, said the decision is line with international best practices and to forestall a repeat of earlier experiences implementing the policy.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/11\/08\/breaking-cbn-issues-fresh-directive-on-old-new-naira-notes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBN<\/a> introduced the redesigned N200, N500 and N1.000 denominations in October 2022 and certain deadlines were set for the old design of these denominations to cease as legal tenders.<\/p>\n<p>The statement read, \u201cWithout prejudice, the Central Bank of Nigeria wishes to inform the general public of its desire to extend the legal tender status deadline of the old design of N200, N500 and N1,000 denominations; ad infinitum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is in line with international best practices and to forestall a repeat of earlier experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThus, all banknotes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, in accordance with Section 20(5) of the CBN Act 2007, will continue to remain legal tender, ad infinitum. even beyond the initial December 31, 2023, deadline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Central Bank of Nigeria is working with the relevant authorities to vacate the subsisting court ruling on the same subject.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccordingly, all CBN branches across the country will continue to issue and accept all denominations of Nigerian banknotes, old and redesigned, to and from deposit money banks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe general public is enjoined to continue to accept all Naira banknotes (old or redesigned) for day-to-day transactions and handle these banknotes with utmost care, to safeguard and protect the lifecycle of the banknotes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, the general public is encouraged to embrace alternative modes of payment, e-channels, for day-to-day transactions.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Says decision is line with international best practices and to forestall a repeat of earlier experiences implementing the policy The Central Bank of Nigeria has extended the validity of the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes indefinitely .
