{"id":29726,"date":"2021-05-05T05:34:11","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T04:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=29726"},"modified":"2021-05-05T05:34:11","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T04:34:11","slug":"sheikh-gumi-speaks-on-abduction-of-greenfield-university-students-reveals-true-abductors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/05\/sheikh-gumi-speaks-on-abduction-of-greenfield-university-students-reveals-true-abductors\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheikh Gumi speaks on abduction of Greenfield University students, reveals true abductors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has stated that Boko Haram insurgents not bandits abducted the students of Greenfield University, Kaduna.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that several students of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/21\/breaking-gunmen-abduct-varsity-students-in-kaduna\/\">Greenfield University<\/a> <\/strong>were abducted by gunmen on April 18.<\/p>\n<p>Following the sad incident, the abductors have <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/03\/bandits-threaten-to-kill-17-greenfield-varsity-students-if-n100m-ransom-isnt-paid\/\">killed five of the students and threatened to kill 17 of them<\/a><\/strong> still in captivity if a ransom of N100 million and 10 motorcycles are not delivered to them.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the issue when he featured on Africa Independent Television (AIT) on Tuesday, Gumi said Boko Haram insurgents are beginning to infiltrate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/04\/threats-of-bandits-must-not-be-taken-lightly-shehu-sani-tells-el-rufai\/\">bandit<\/a> herders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, we have two groups of bandits. We have the ordinary Fulani ethnic herdsmen and now there is another element which is coming in, it is the terrorist, the religious idealogues and this is what I\u2019ve been fearing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue is getting compounded because this element is coming in; Boko Haram is coming into the scene now. They are the ones that captured Greenfield students. It is not a question of sleeping. You have to act very fast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe infiltration is already taking place but it is not as deep and we want these herdsmen to be protected against the invasion of these terrorists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the leader is from Jalingo. He is from Adamawa. He is not the local Fulani we have here. So this means that the north-eastern element is coming into this area and we have to move fast. We don\u2019t have that luxury of time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been trying to speak with the government but nobody is really trying to listen to me or speak with me on this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he has shared the intelligence he gathered on the whereabouts of the students with security agencies, Gumi said: \u201cEverybody knows where they are. The parents know where they are. The point is that the students are in danger, any firing will kill 19 students and that\u2019s why there is caution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gumi also called on the Kaduna state government to pay the ransom to secure the release of the abducted students.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that while N100 million is a huge sum of money, it is not too much to sacrifice for the lives of the students.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the security agencies can go after the kidnappers and retrieve the money after the students have been freed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dFive souls were killed. Why? What amount of money is too big for us to save the lives of those five students, what amount of money?\u201d Gumi asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecondly, we can give them the money to get the boys out of danger then go after our money. Nobody is saying you shouldn\u2019t find them, you can get the two back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo say you will not negotiate with them and also not take action against them, I cannot understand that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cleric further said he and Nasir el-Rufai, Kaduna governor, have had a discussion on the issue but have \u201cparallel views\u201d on how to handle it.<\/p>\n<p>The Kaduna state government has over time maintained that it will not negotiate with bandits.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has stated that Boko Haram insurgents not bandits abducted the students of Greenfield University, Kaduna.
