{"id":299058,"date":"2023-11-30T07:32:35","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T06:32:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=299058"},"modified":"2023-11-30T07:32:35","modified_gmt":"2023-11-30T06:32:35","slug":"some-cultural-practices-fuelling-illegal-migration-naptip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/11\/30\/some-cultural-practices-fuelling-illegal-migration-naptip\/","title":{"rendered":"Some cultural practices fuelling illegal migration \u2013 NAPTIP"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>NAPTIP said it found that many victims of human trafficking are discouraged from pursuing justice over the fear of being stigmatised and also because the trial of the suspects often takes a long time in court<\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has identified certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/06\/11\/oyetola-inaugurates-cultural-tourism-clubs-for-osun-secondary-schools\/\">cultural<\/a> practices contributing to the rise of illegal migration.<\/p>\n<p>NAPTIP&#8217;s Director-General, Fatima Waziri-Azi, reported that the agency has effectively rescued and assisted more than 22,000 victims since its establishment.<\/p>\n<p>In its Director-General Performance Year Two Report sighted by our correspondent on Wednesday, NAPTIP noted that some cultural practices \u201cpromote overseas travel regardless of the means, complicating efforts to combat trafficking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It said, \u201cCultural and religious factors often intersect with the issue of human trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome sects and practices promote overseas travel regardless of the means, complicating efforts to combat trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCounter-trafficking stakeholders face the challenging task of continuously raising awareness in communities about the risks involved in seeking opportunities abroad and the associated criminal elements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, practices like fostering and the Almajiri system are sometimes exploited, leading to the exploitation of vulnerable victims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NAPTIP said it found that many victims of human trafficking are discouraged from pursuing justice over the fear of being stigmatised and also because the trial of the suspects often takes a long time in court.<\/p>\n<p>It added: \u201cVictims may face threats from perpetrators or other factors that discourage them from pursuing justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fear of reprisal from traffickers often dissuades victims and witnesses from testifying, making it difficult to secure convictions.
