{"id":301111,"date":"2023-12-15T16:48:37","date_gmt":"2023-12-15T15:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=301111"},"modified":"2023-12-15T16:48:37","modified_gmt":"2023-12-15T15:48:37","slug":"lagos-man-in-court-for-gambling-with-employers-n300000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/12\/15\/lagos-man-in-court-for-gambling-with-employers-n300000\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagos man in court for gambling with employer\u2019s N300,000"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>According to the complainant, sometime in October, he sold sachet water worth N88,000 but failed to remit the money but came days later to tell his boss that customers owed him, an act that gradually became a norm<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>One Samuel Meyiwa has been dragged to court for allegedly using his employer\u2019s money to gamble in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/12\/15\/sanwo-olu-promises-lagosians-health-palliatives-subsidy-on-medication\/\">Lagos State<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 26-year-old defendant was arraigned before a Yaba Magistrate\u2019s Court by the Lagos State Police Command on one count of stealing.<\/p>\n<p>It was gathered in court that Meyiwa started working in March as a driver who sells sachet water with a truck for a company in Bariga but has been using part of the money from his daily sales to gamble without the knowledge of his employer.<\/p>\n<p>According to the complainant, sometime in October, he sold sachet water worth N88,000 but failed to remit the money but came days later to tell his boss that customers owed him, an act that gradually became a norm.<\/p>\n<p>However, in November, Meyiwa drove off as usual with bags of sachet water worth N300,000, supplied all the goods but went to bet with the money and, when he lost, ran off.<\/p>\n<p>All attempts to reach him proved abortive, he was later seem in another company where he had started working and was arrested by the police.<\/p>\n<p>Oriabure told the court that Meyiwa committed the offence between March and November 2023 at Okusanya Street, off Adebayo Road, Bariga, adding that the offence contravened Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The charge read, \u201cThat you Samuel Meyiwa, sometime March to November 2023 at Bariga in the Yaba Magisterial District did steal the sum of three hundred thousand naira cash from Freedom Pure Water Company situated at No 10 NG Okusanya street off Adebayo Road, Bariga, where you were employed as a driver and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The defendant pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge preferred against him.<\/p>\n<p>Following his plea, the magistrate, Magistrate A.O Salawu, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum and then adjourned the case till January 25, 2024, for trial.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the complainant, sometime in October, he sold sachet water worth N88,000 but failed to remit the money but came days later to tell his boss that customers owed him, an act that gradually became a norm.
