{"id":301868,"date":"2023-12-20T11:10:47","date_gmt":"2023-12-20T10:10:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=301868"},"modified":"2023-12-20T11:10:47","modified_gmt":"2023-12-20T10:10:47","slug":"breaking-rivers-lawmakers-withdraw-impeachment-notice-against-fubara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/12\/20\/breaking-rivers-lawmakers-withdraw-impeachment-notice-against-fubara\/","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: Rivers lawmakers withdraw impeachment notice against Fubara"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>They said the decision was made out of respect for President Bola Tinubu who on Monday convened a reconciliation meeting between the warring parties<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 26 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have withdrawn their impeachment notice against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in the notice of withdrawal read on the house floor on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>They said the decision was made out of respect for President Bola Tinubu who on Monday convened a reconciliation meeting between the warring parties.<\/p>\n<p>The 26 lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike sat at the House of Assembly Complex on Wednesday morning where the decision was read out.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA reported that President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/12\/19\/presidency-speaks-on-rivers-crisis-says-tinubus-intervention-not-political\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tinubu on Monday brokered a peace deal between Fubara and his predecessor, Wike<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The tension in the state allegedly stems from a power struggle between the governor and Wike, who is currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Rivers Elders and Leaders have rejected the outcome of President Bola Tinubu\u2019s intervention in the political crisis rocking the State.<\/p>\n<p>The elders and leaders kicked against the directives issued by President Tinubu to the Rivers State Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, saying it contravenes the constitution.<\/p>\n<p>The elders, rising from an emergency meeting held on Tuesday, said the directives as issued by Tinubu, are unacceptable, null and void.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA review of Mr. President\u201fs directives for the resolution of the political impasse in Rivers State showed that the directives contravene the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which Mr. President swore to uphold at all times,\u201d the Elders said in a communique read by former Rivers State Governor, His Excellency, Chief Rufus Ada George<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe directives unilaterally suspended the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by virtue of an attempt to reverse a court order recognizing Rt. Honourable Edison Ehie as the speaker and directing that the remainder of members of the House of Assembly constituted the quorum for legislative business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat the directive also contravenes the hallowed doctrine and practice of separation of powers, particularly as it affects the responsibility of the judiciary. Can Mr President or the executive arm government overrule the decisions of the court of competent jurisdiction?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis portends executive rascality which undermines our constitutional democracy, rule of law and good governance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe directives to the parties were one sided in favour of Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe directive to re-present the budget passed and signed into law is a clear attempt to ridicule and denigrate the office of the Governor and the good people of Rivers State including the Judiciary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore any resolution or directive that intends to undermine the principle of separation of powers and the rule of law is unacceptable, null and void and will be resisted, using all constitutional means at our disposal.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They said the decision was made out of respect for President Bola Tinubu who on Monday convened a reconciliation meeting between the warring parties The 26 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have withdrawn their impeachment notice against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
