{"id":302061,"date":"2023-12-21T13:37:59","date_gmt":"2023-12-21T12:37:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=302061"},"modified":"2023-12-21T13:37:59","modified_gmt":"2023-12-21T12:37:59","slug":"man-regains-freedom-after-spending-48-years-in-jail-for-crime-he-didnt-commit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/12\/21\/man-regains-freedom-after-spending-48-years-in-jail-for-crime-he-didnt-commit\/","title":{"rendered":"Man regains freedom after spending 48 years in jail for crime he didn&#8217;t commit"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Simmons regains his freedom in July after serving a total of 48 years, one month and 18 days in prison<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Glynn Simmons, an African-American, has been exonerated of the crime he was convicted for after spending almost 50 years in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/12\/21\/no-jailbreak-attacks-in-2023-ncos\/\">jail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>71-year-old Simmons was declared innocent in the US state of Oklahoma after it was discovered that he did not commit the murder he was convicted for.<\/p>\n<p>The National Registry of Exonerations says Simmons served more time behind bars before being exonerated than any other inmate in US history, according to<\/p>\n<p>Simmons was released in July after serving a total of 48 years, one month and 18 days in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Simmons and another man, Don Roberts, were sentenced to death in 1975 for the murder the previous year of a 30-year-old liquor store clerk during a robbery in Edmond, Oklahoma.<\/p>\n<p>Their sentences were later commuted to life in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Simmons and Roberts were convicted only on the basis of the testimony of a teenage customer who was shot in the head during the robbery but survived.<\/p>\n<p>She picked them out of a police lineup but a subsequent investigation cast significant doubt on the reliability of her identifications.<\/p>\n<p>Both men had also claimed at trial that they were not even in Oklahoma at the time of the murder.<\/p>\n<p>US District Court Judge Amy Palumbo threw out Simmons\u2019 conviction in July and declared him innocent at a hearing in Oklahoma County District Court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a day we\u2019ve been waiting on for a long, long time,\u201d Simmons told reporters. \u201cWe can say justice was done today, finally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roberts, Simmons co-defendant, was released from prison in 2008, according to The National Registry of Exonerations.<\/p>\n<p>Simmons may now be eligible for compensation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s been done can\u2019t be undone but there could be accountability,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s what I\u2019m about right now.
