{"id":303109,"date":"2023-12-28T07:17:32","date_gmt":"2023-12-28T06:17:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=303109"},"modified":"2023-12-28T07:17:32","modified_gmt":"2023-12-28T06:17:32","slug":"court-sends-woman-to-prison-for-killing-house-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/12\/28\/court-sends-woman-to-prison-for-killing-house-help\/","title":{"rendered":"Court sends woman to prison for killing house help"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Chief Magistrate Hadiza Abdulrahman ordered the remand of the defendant and adjourned the matter to February 1, 2024, for further mention<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In Kano state, One Hafsat Surajo has been sent to a correctional centre for allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/12\/22\/kano-24-year-old-housewife-kills-domestic-staff\/\">stabbing her househelp<\/a>, Nafiu Hafizu, 38, to death.<\/p>\n<p>A Kano Chief Magistrates\u2019 Court ordered the remand of the 24-year-old housewife on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The defendant, a resident of Unguwa Uku Quarters Kano, is arraigned on on a two-count charge of attempt to commit suicide and culpable homicide.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Magistrate Hadiza Abdulrahman ordered the remand of the defendant and adjourned the matter to February 1, 2024, for further mention.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Lamido Sorondinki, informed the court that on December 20, the defendant used a sharp knife and attempted to commit suicide by killing herself and in the process cut herself on her left hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the process, the defendant used the said sharp knife and stabbed Nafiu on his chest and other parts of his body, which led to his death,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The defendant pleaded guilty to the first charge and pleaded not guilty to the second.<\/p>\n<p>The offence contravened the provisions of Sections 281 and 221 of the Penal Code.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Hafsat\u2019s husband, Dayyabu Abdullahi, Adamu Muhammad and Nasidi Muhammad were arraigned before the Chief Magistrates\u2019 Court for concealment of fact on the alleged murder of Nafiu.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants were arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy, concealment of fact and false information.<\/p>\n<p>Sorondinki alleged that on December 20, the defendants conspired with one Haruna Adamu, now at large, and concealed the cause of Nafiu\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe defendants misled and gave false information to the deceased family by saying he died as a result of pile surgery,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants denied committing the offence.<\/p>\n<p>According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 97, 277 and 178 of the Penal Code.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have received a copy of the case diary from the police; we will study it and issue legal advice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy lord, we will furnish the defence counsel with all the facilities concerning the case,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Defence Counsel, Rabiu Sidi and Rabiu Abdullahi, urged the court to grant the defendants bail, pursuant to sections 36(5) of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution as amended and sections 168 and 172 of ACJL 2019 Kano State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll we want is justice to be done to both parties,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>The magistrate ordered that the defendants be remanded in a correctional centre and adjourned the matter to January 8, 2024, for mention.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chief Magistrate Hadiza Abdulrahman ordered the remand of the defendant and adjourned the matter to February 1, 2024, for further mention In Kano state, One Hafsat Surajo has been sent to a correctional centre for allegedly stabbing her househelp, Nafiu Hafizu, 38, to death.
