{"id":304547,"date":"2024-01-06T19:51:58","date_gmt":"2024-01-06T18:51:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=304547"},"modified":"2024-01-06T19:51:58","modified_gmt":"2024-01-06T18:51:58","slug":"betta-edu-agf-speaks-on-tinubus-minister-n585m-payment-request","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/01\/06\/betta-edu-agf-speaks-on-tinubus-minister-n585m-payment-request\/","title":{"rendered":"Betta Edu: AGF Speaks On Tinubu\u2019s Minister N585m Payment Request"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Madein said it is not responsible for making payments for projects and programmes on behalf of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>Madein reiterated her determination to uphold the principles of accountability and transparency in the management of public finances.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Dr. Oluwatoyin Madein, the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), has made it clear that her office does not process payments on behalf of government organisations.<\/p>\n<p>Madein provided clarification on a statement made on Saturday in Abuja by Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press at the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF).<\/p>\n<p>Madein claims that activities and projects carried out by Federal Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) are not reimbursed by the OAGF.<\/p>\n<p>She was reacting to media reports concerning a request from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and Poverty Alleviation for payment of grants to vulnerable groups in some states of the federation.<\/p>\n<p>She said that allocations were released to self-accounting MDAs in line with the budget, and such MDAs are responsible for the implementation of their projects and payments for such projects.<\/p>\n<p>Madein said that, although her office received the said request from the ninistry, it did not carry out the payment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ministry was, however, advised on the appropriate steps to take in making such payments in line with the established payment procedure,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said that in such situations, payments were usually processed by the affected miniseries as self-accounting entities.<\/p>\n<p>Maiden said that no bulk payment is supposed to be made to an individual\u2019s account in the name of \u201cproject accountant\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She said that such payments should be sent to the beneficiaries through their verified bank accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Madein reiterated her determination to uphold the principles of accountability and transparency in the management of public finances.<\/p>\n<p>She advised MDAs to always ensure that the requisite steps were taken in carrying out financial transactions.<\/p>\n<p>The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the clarification is connected with the current probe of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/01\/06\/tinubus-minister-betta-edu-clears-air-on-transfer-of-n585m-to-private-bank-account\/\">President Bola Tinubu<\/a> recently approved the suspension and investigation of Halima Shehu, National Coordinator of the National Social Investment Program Agency (NSIPA), over alleged financial impropriety of about N30 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Shehu, however, reportedly told her investigators that that she moved the N30 billion she is accused of embezzling to other accounts because the minister, Dr Betta Edu, wanted to embezzle it.<\/p>\n<p>She reportedly said that Edu had already misappropriated N585 million by transferring the sum to a private bank account.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter that has since leaked to the public, Edu asked the AGF to transfer N585 million to the said private bank account in UBA, belonging to one Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting, Edu said that the N585 million grant for vulnerable groups was approved, adding that the funds were meant to be grants for vulnerable groups.<\/p>\n<p>She said that the transfer of the N585 million followed due process.<\/p>\n<p>According to the minister, Mojisola, whose bank account was stated to receive the payment, is the project accountant for the Grants for Vulnerable Groups (GVG) scheme<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Madein said it is not responsible for making payments for projects and programmes on behalf of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
