{"id":305287,"date":"2024-01-12T09:23:18","date_gmt":"2024-01-12T08:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=305287"},"modified":"2024-01-12T09:23:18","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T08:23:18","slug":"i-have-one-year-to-live-ex-england-manager-eriksson-battling-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/01\/12\/i-have-one-year-to-live-ex-england-manager-eriksson-battling-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"I have one year to live \u2013 Ex-England manager, Eriksson battling cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The 75-year-old is famous for having led the Three Lions of England through the World Cup finals in 2002 and 2006, losing in the quarter-finals on both occasions<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and has a year to live in a \u201cbest-case scenario\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The 75-year-old is famous for having led the Three Lions of England through the World Cup finals in 2002 and 2006, losing in the quarter-finals on both occasions.<\/p>\n<p>Eriksson, in February 2023, had to resign from his role at Swedish club Karlstad due to \u201chealth issues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone can see that I have a disease that\u2019s not good, and everyone supposes that it\u2019s cancer, and it is. But I have to fight it as long as possible,\u201d Eriksson said in an appearance on Swedish Radio P1.<\/p>\n<p>Eriksson said he was trying not to think about his illness, adding: \u201cYou have to trick your brain. I could go around thinking about that all the time and sit at home and be miserable and think I\u2019m unlucky and so on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s easy to end up in that position. But no, see the positive sides of things and don\u2019t bury yourself in setbacks, because this is the biggest setback of them all of course. It just came from nothing. And that makes you shocked,\u201d Eriksson added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not in any major pain. But I\u2019ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/01\/03\/tennis-legend-navratilova-diagnosed-with-breast-throat-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diagnosed<\/a> with a disease that you can slow down but you cannot operate. So it is what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eriksson began his career at Sweden\u2019s Degerfors IF, before taking charge of Benfica for an immensely successful spell between 1982-84.<\/p>\n<p>He also won titles at AS Roma, Sampdoria and Lazio before becoming England\u2019s first foreign coach in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Despite only losing five competitive games, Eriksson\u2019s time at England was a rollercoaster ride, with some superb performances on the field accompanied by scandals off the pitch.<\/p>\n<p>His England team was billed as a golden generation, with a team comprised of high-profile players like David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney, but failed to win any major silverware.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from their two World Cup quarter-finals, England also made it to the last eight of the European Championships in 2004, where they lost on penalties to Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>The Swede occupied the front pages following an affair with former FA secretary Faria Alam and was caught in the infamous \u201cFake Sheikh\u201d sting when a tabloid paper set up him up with a reporter posing as a rich Arab investor.<\/p>\n<p>Following his departure from England in 2006, Eriksson coached a string of teams including Manchester City, Mexico\u2019s national team and Leicester City.<\/p>\n<p>His last coaching role of a glittering managerial career that spanned four decades was with the Philippines in 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 75-year-old is famous for having led the Three Lions of England through the World Cup finals in 2002 and 2006, losing in the quarter-finals on both occasions Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and has a year to live in a \u201cbest-case scenario\u201d.
