{"id":308147,"date":"2024-01-30T20:04:33","date_gmt":"2024-01-30T19:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=308147"},"modified":"2024-01-30T20:04:33","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T19:04:33","slug":"uphold-neutrality-mahmood-yakubu-tells-new-inec-rec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/01\/30\/uphold-neutrality-mahmood-yakubu-tells-new-inec-rec\/","title":{"rendered":"Uphold Neutrality &#8211; Mahmood Yakubu Tells New INEC REC"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Umoren is an indigene of Akwa Ibom State and holds a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Geography from the University of Benin.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>Recall that the Senate had on November 2023 approved the appointment of 10 nominees of President Bola Tinubu as RECs.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, has advised Etekamba Umore, the just sworn-in Resident Electoral Commissioner, to maintain objectivity in the performance of his duties.<\/p>\n<p>This was revealed in a statement released on Tuesday by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/01\/30\/air-force-chief-urges-inec-to-settle-outstanding-debts-for-improved-services\/\">INEC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>President Bola Tinubu&#8217;s ten nominees for RECs were appointed after the Senate gave its approval in November 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Tinubu&#8217;s appeal for confirmation of the RECs&#8217; nomination for INEC under Section 154(1) of the Constitution was granted, and the appointment ensued.<\/p>\n<p>Mahmood swore in nine of the RECs on December 12 2023, noting that the 10th REC-designate would be sworn in January on the expiration of the tenure of the REC representing Akwa Ibom State.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Tuesday statement, Umoren has been deployed to Delta State following the expiration of the tenure of the last holder of the office on January 29, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The statement read, \u201cThe commission held its regular weekly meeting today, Tuesday, January 30, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe meeting was preceded by the swearing-in of Mr Etekamba Udo Umoren, as Resident Electoral Commissioner and deployed to Delta State following the expiration of the tenure of the last holder of the office yesterday, Monday, January 29 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Chairman of the commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, urged the new REC to adhere strictly to his oath of office which requires neutrality and impartiality in the discharge of his duties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe also enjoined the new REC to abide by the commission\u2019s Code of Conduct and sustain regular consultations with stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Umoren is an indigene of Akwa Ibom State and holds a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Geography from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/11\/14\/uniben-fractional-union-distances-self-from-nlc-nationwide-strike\/\">University of Benin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He served in various capacities in the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service, rising to the position of Permanent Secretary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Umoren is an indigene of Akwa Ibom State and holds a Bachelor\u2019s degree in Geography from the University of Benin.
