{"id":30924,"date":"2021-05-07T17:37:43","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T16:37:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=30924"},"modified":"2021-05-07T17:37:43","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T16:37:43","slug":"supreme-court-affirms-deregistration-of-74-political-parties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/07\/supreme-court-affirms-deregistration-of-74-political-parties\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme court affirms deregistration of 74 political parties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The deregistration of 74 political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been affirmed by the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>The court at its sitting on Friday upheld an earlier judgement\u00a0of the court of appeal, which stated that INEC\u2019s action was in order.<\/p>\n<p>A seven-man panel of the apex court led by Chima Nweze held that the deregistration was done in compliance with the extant provisions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/03\/senator-calls-for-the-removal-of-exclusive-list-from-constitution\/\">constitution<\/a> and electoral act.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that INEC had deregistered the parties in February, 2020 after\u00a0citing their failure to meet certain criteria listed in the constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the criteria they failed to meet included winning at least 25 percent of the votes cast in one state in a presidential election or 25 percent of the votes cast in one local government area.<\/p>\n<p>However, some of the parties went to court to contest the commission\u2019s action.<\/p>\n<p>In August, the court of appeal sitting in Abuja said 22 of the parties were illegally deregistered.<\/p>\n<p>This was after the same court earlier validated the power of INEC to deregister the parties while determining a case involving the National Unity Party (NUP).<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Amid the confusion, both the commission and the NUP headed to the supreme court in separate applications challenging the court judgements.<\/p>\n<p>With the verdict of the apex court, the number of political parties in Nigeria remains 18.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The deregistration of 74 political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been affirmed by the Supreme Court.
