{"id":30998,"date":"2021-05-07T21:31:05","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T20:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=30998"},"modified":"2021-05-07T21:40:15","modified_gmt":"2021-05-07T20:40:15","slug":"prominent-nigerians-to-face-trial-for-terrorism-financing-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/07\/prominent-nigerians-to-face-trial-for-terrorism-financing-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"Prominent Nigerians to face trial for financing terrorism \u2013 FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, said on Friday, that ongoing investigations have revealed many highly placed Nigerians and businessmen involved in financing terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, revealed this when he fielded questions from State House correspondents in Abuja on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, far-reaching investigations have indicated that high-profile individuals have been implicated in various cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/22\/breaking-presidency-breaks-silence-on-pantamis-alleged-link-to-terrorism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">terrorism<\/a> financing across the country.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cAs you will actually know, sometimes back there were certain convictions of Nigerians allegedly involved in terrorism financing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat gave rise to a wider and far-reaching investigation in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2018m happy to report that arising from the wider investigation that has been conducted in Nigeria, a number of people, both institutional and otherwise, were found to be culpable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean some reasonable grounds for suspicion of terrorism financing have been established, or perhaps has been proven to be in existence in respect of the transactions of certain higher-profile individuals and businessmen across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m happy to report that investigation has been ongoing for a long and it has reached an advanced stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArising from the investigation, there exists, certainly, reasonable grounds for suspicion that a lot of Nigerians, high-profile institutions and otherwise, are involved in terrorism financing and they are being profiled for prosecution.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>According to the minister, the Federal Government is initiating processes of prosecuting those high-profile individuals that are found to be financing terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>Malami, who could not disclose the names or number of those to be prosecuted for terrorism financing, said more discoveries were being made as fresh facts were being uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs to the number, the investigation is ongoing and it has to be conclusive before one can arrive at a certain number, but one thing I can tell you is that it\u2019s a large number and they are being profiled for prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is indeed a large number and I\u2019m not in a position to give you the precise number as of now because the profiling and investigation are ongoing,\u2019\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n<p>The minister reiterated the determination of the government to \u201caggressively pursue those people that are involved in terrorist financing as far as the Nigerian State is concerned.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, said on Friday, that ongoing investigations have revealed many highly placed Nigerians and businessmen involved in financing terrorism.
