{"id":310225,"date":"2024-02-14T15:06:37","date_gmt":"2024-02-14T14:06:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=310225"},"modified":"2024-02-14T15:06:37","modified_gmt":"2024-02-14T14:06:37","slug":"fg-clarifies-uk-nigeria-bilateral-deal-on-legal-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/02\/14\/fg-clarifies-uk-nigeria-bilateral-deal-on-legal-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"FG clarifies UK-Nigeria bilateral deal on legal practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>Foreign licensed lawyers, including those from the UK, cannot currently practice in Nigeria, as stated in the MOU<\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Nigerian government has clarified aspects of the Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP) signed with the United Kingdom, following backlash from Nigerians over alleged one-sided agreements.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria&#8217;s Minister for Trade and Investment, Doris Uzoka-Anitie, addressed the concerns raised after a statement by the UK\u2019s Department of Business and Trade suggested an agreement allowing UK lawyers to practice international law in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/02\/13\/senate-to-consider-bill-on-rights-of-nigerians-to-carry-firearms-for-self-defence\/\">Nigeria<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Uzoka-Anitie in a thread on X, walked back her earlier statement and said there was no such legal agreement between Nigeria and the UK, emphasizing that the partnership focuses on various sectors of mutual interest, including finance, healthcare, and agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Partnership was well thought-out and painstakingly negotiated by Nigerian experts across various sectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt touched on areas of mutual business interests including finance, technical barriers to trade, healthcare, investment, customs and trade facilitation, agriculture, intellectual property, creative industry and legal services \u2014 to mention a few.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegrettably, our earlier report erroneously suggest that Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that allows lawyers licensed in the United Kingdom to practise in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wish to state emphatically that there is no such provision or agreement in the MOU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reiterated that Nigeria does not have a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with the UK and made no commitment to allow UK-licensed lawyers to practice in Nigeria under the MOU.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign licensed lawyers, including those from the UK, cannot currently practice in Nigeria, as stated in the MOU.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) had also condemned the purported agreement, saying the statement credited to the minister was \u201cridiculous, unpatriotic, and uninformed\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Foreign licensed lawyers, including those from the UK, cannot currently practice in Nigeria, as stated in the MOU The Nigerian government has clarified aspects of the Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP) signed with the United Kingdom, following backlash from Nigerians over alleged one-sided agreements.
