{"id":310493,"date":"2024-02-16T16:39:20","date_gmt":"2024-02-16T15:39:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=310493"},"modified":"2024-02-16T16:39:20","modified_gmt":"2024-02-16T15:39:20","slug":"tinubu-approves-upgrade-of-16-key-healthcare-infrastructure-nationwide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/02\/16\/tinubu-approves-upgrade-of-16-key-healthcare-infrastructure-nationwide\/","title":{"rendered":"Tinubu approves upgrade of 16 key healthcare infrastructure nationwide"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The projects, categorised into two sections, six teaching hospitals and ten other critical healthcare facilities, distributed across geopolitical zones, will see the selected institutions receiving upgrades and re-equipment with state-of-the-art medical facilities<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate upgrade of key health infrastructure and equipment across all six geo-political zones of the country.<\/p>\n<p>A statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said the projects are in line with President Tinubu administration\u2019s vision of overhauling the health and social welfare sector for enhanced service delivery to all Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>The projects, categorised into two sections, six teaching hospitals and ten other critical healthcare facilities, distributed across geopolitical zones, will see the selected institutions receiving upgrades and re-equipment with state-of-the-art medical facilities.<\/p>\n<p>It also disclosed that the projects would be carried out by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA).<\/p>\n<p>The approved projects, according to the statement, were conceived as part of President Tinubu\u2019s bid to ensure that world class cancer diagnosis and care is accessible across the country.<\/p>\n<p>While the teaching hospitals are for the establishment of oncology and nuclear medicine centres per facility, the ten healthcare service expansion projects will be across the fields of radiology, clinical pathology, medical and radiation oncology, and cardiac catheterization<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, the six teaching hospitals include University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin, (South-south); Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria (Northwest); University of Nigeria (Nsukka) Teaching Hospital (Southeast); Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina (Northwest); University of Jos Teaching Hospital, Jos (North-central); and Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos (Southwest).<\/p>\n<p>The ten critical healthcare facilities to receive service expansion projects are as follows: Northwest: Reference Hospital, Kaduna, (Radiology, clinical pathology, medical and radiation oncology)<\/p>\n<p>Southeast: Medical Diagnostic Centre Complex, Enugu \u2014 (Radiology, clinical pathology, medical &amp; radiation oncology)<\/p>\n<p>Northwest: Usman Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto \u2014 (Diagnostic and intervention radiology, clinical pathology, and cardiac catheterization)<\/p>\n<p>Southwest: University College Hospital, Ibadan \u2014 (Diagnostic and intervention radiology, clinical pathology, and cardiac catheterization)<\/p>\n<p>South-south: University of Uyo Teaching Hospital \u2014 (Radiology and clinical pathology)<\/p>\n<p>Northeast: Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi \u2014 (Radiology and clinical pathology)<\/p>\n<p>South-south: Federal Medical Centre, Asaba \u2014 (Radiology and clinical pathology)<\/p>\n<p>North-central: Harmony Advanced Diagnostic Centre Complex, Ilorin \u2014 (Radiology and clinical pathology)<\/p>\n<p>North-central: Jos University Teaching Hospital \u2014 (Radiology and clinical pathology)<\/p>\n<p>Northeast: Federal Medical Centre, Nguru \u2014 (Radiology and clinical pathology).<\/p>\n<p>Explaining the reason for the steps, the statement said \u201cupgrading health infrastructure and equipment is a top priority of President Tinubu\u2019s Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo advance this landmark effort, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), will carry out the comprehensive upgradation of cancer-treatment infrastructure and other critical developments in six tertiary hospitals across several geopolitical zones, in addition to the full renovation and expansion of prior investments to improve broad-based access to high-quality healthcare in all six geo-political zones of the federation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese critical projects, set to be delivered within 12-18 months, will improve screening and diagnostics for communicable and non-communicable diseases;
