{"id":311621,"date":"2024-02-24T14:12:13","date_gmt":"2024-02-24T13:12:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=311621"},"modified":"2024-02-24T14:12:13","modified_gmt":"2024-02-24T13:12:13","slug":"hunger-why-distribution-of-free-grains-hasnt-commenced-presidency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/02\/24\/hunger-why-distribution-of-free-grains-hasnt-commenced-presidency\/","title":{"rendered":"Hunger: Why distribution of free grains hasn&#8217;t commenced \u2013 Presidency"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Almost three weeks later, Nigerians are yet to receive the grains or other food commodities as promised as they groan and lament the high cost of food<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Presidency has assured Nigerians that they will soon receive free grains promised by President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/02\/24\/sunday-igboho-seeks-eviction-of-fulanis-from-yorubaland-urges-yoruba-to-stop-lamenting-hunger-under-tinubu\/\">Bola Tinubu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It disclosed why the free distribution of 42,000 metric tonnes of grains to Nigerians to address the current food insecurity has not begun.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the Minister of Agriculture on February 8, promised that the federal government would distribute millet, maize and other food commodities to vulnerable Nigerians to cushion the effect of hardship.<\/p>\n<p>But almost three weeks later, Nigerians are yet to receive the grains or other food commodities as promised as they groan and lament the high cost of food.<\/p>\n<p>Explaining the delay, Special Adviser to the President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the grains would get to Nigerians soon.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Friday, he disclosed that the bagging of grains is ongoing in seven strategic places in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Onanuga also said the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been in charge of bagging the grains that would soon be delivered to indigent Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>The presidential aide also said that 60,000 metric tonnes of rice will be provided by the federal government to give to Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Tinubu administration through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is in the final stages of releasing 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted food commodities to support the vulnerable population across the country,\u201d Onanuga said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe grains in seven locations of strategic reserve, are now being bagged for onward delivery to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The need to bag the grains, caused the delay as the bags were freshly ordered by the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigerians will not need to pay for the grain bags, as they are free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be complemented by the 60,000 metric tonnes of milled rice to be purchased by the Federal Government from the Mega Rice Millers.<\/p>\n<p>Nigerians\u2019ll see effects of 2024 budget in shortest possible time \u2013 Presidency<br \/>\n\u201cAlready, with the announcement of the impending releases of food commodities from the Strategic Reserve, there is a noticeable reduction in commodity prices across major grains markets in the country, Minister of Agriculture, Senator Abubakar Kyari.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Almost three weeks later, Nigerians are yet to receive the grains or other food commodities as promised as they groan and lament the high cost of food.
