{"id":313850,"date":"2024-03-10T10:46:31","date_gmt":"2024-03-10T09:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=313850"},"modified":"2024-03-10T10:46:31","modified_gmt":"2024-03-10T09:46:31","slug":"my-father-never-wanted-ministerial-job-bello-el-rufai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/03\/10\/my-father-never-wanted-ministerial-job-bello-el-rufai\/","title":{"rendered":"My father never wanted ministerial job \u2013 Bello El-Rufai"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Says\u00a0it took his pleas and those of other family members for his father to accept the ministerial nomination from President Bola Tinubu<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The lawmaker representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Bello El-Rufai said his father and former Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State never wanted a ministerial job.<\/p>\n<p>Bello disclosed this in an chat with Seun Okinbaloye on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>He said Nigeria lost an effective administrator in his father, after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/03\/07\/akpabio-denies-being-part-of-sarakis-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate<\/a> rejected his appointment as minister.<\/p>\n<p>Bello said it took his pleas and those of other family members for his father to accept the ministerial nomination from President Bola Tinubu.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the Senate in August, confirmed 45, out of the 48 ministerial nominees sent by the President.<\/p>\n<p>But, during the confirmation of the ministerial list sent by Tinubu, the Senate refused to confirm El-Rufai\u2019s nomination as well as those of two other nominees for appointment as ministers.<\/p>\n<p>Senate President Godswill Akpabio, said the three nominees not confirmed would be subjected to further security checks and urged those not confirmed to take their matter to the President.<\/p>\n<p>The ministerial nominees rejected were El-Rufai, Stella Okotete (Delta), and Sani Danladi (Taraba).<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the development, Bello said he was disappointed when he learnt that his father\u2019s nomination was rejected.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cI was in the National Assembly when my father\u2019s nomination was rejected. It was very disappointing and still is. Myself, the Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, and one of my father\u2019s commissioners, Mr Hafiz Bayero, played a key role in convincing my father to work with this current government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe (Nasir) didn\u2019t want it. It\u2019s hard for Nigerians to believe it because they feel it is everyone in Nigeria who wants to be a minister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be fair to him, he didn\u2019t want the job. We convinced him that, with the antecedents of Asiwaju, he would create an excellent team as he did in Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President wanted to work with him. It was clear when he came to Kaduna. We also had an idea of what his portfolio would be. It was meant to be power and gas. He insisted to the President in private that Nigeria would not sort its electricity issue if gas was not put under the other components of power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe irony is that nothing has been rougher than the lack of power in the last two weeks. I\u2019m disappointed because Nigeria lost an effective administrator in my father, one who is willing to make difficult decisions to solve a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bello, further said many Nigerians do not really know his father.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cMy father is a very simple person who\u2019s been stereotyped a lot. I got a video of him where people say this or that about him without even knowing him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father does not go out of his way to change what people think about him. He doesn\u2019t really care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a perception that he\u2019s anti-Christian. But, the closest person to him since we (children) were four years old was a man from Cross River State, Peter Jones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReligion is personal to us. As minister of the Federal Capital Territory, he demolished mosques. The imam said he hated Islam. He demolished churches and the Christians said he hated Christians.
