{"id":315016,"date":"2024-03-18T09:48:27","date_gmt":"2024-03-18T08:48:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=315016"},"modified":"2024-03-18T09:48:27","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T08:48:27","slug":"mbah-identifies-major-setbacks-to-nigerias-economic-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/03\/18\/mbah-identifies-major-setbacks-to-nigerias-economic-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Mbah Identifies Major Setbacks To Nigeria\u2019s Economic Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The governor emphasised the importance of visionary leaders who can translate dreams into reality, despite the widespread demand for leaders with transcendental values.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>Mbah added that the comprehensive plan to turn the state&#8217;s fortunes around included the administration&#8217;s significant investments in the fields of agriculture, water, health, and education in addition to security.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Peter Mbah, governor of Enugu says only radical thinking and a creative approach to governance could stimulate rapid economic development in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Mbah said this became necessary given the nation\u2019s brand of presidential federalism which excessively vests the nation\u2019s revenues in the centre, thereby hindering bold social and economic development.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Sunday by Uche Anichukwu, the governor&#8217;s s senior special assistant on external relations, the governor<br \/>\nmade the call in a public lecture entitled \u201cEnugu State, Nigeria: New Political Leadership; Bold Economic Vision \u2013 Spotlight on the Health and Education Strategies\u201d which he delivered at the London School of Economics (LSE)<\/p>\n<p>Mbah, according to the statement, maintained that the difficult times in Nigeria required bold and unusual solutions that come from thinking outside the box.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, commended the transfer of railways and power from the exclusive to concurrent list to enable the states to play a role in those sectors and lauded the ongoing discussions and predisposition of the President Bola Tinubu administration towards the devolution of more powers to the federating units.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe choice of a presidential system might have been well-informed, shaped by the inherent benefits of federalism in other countries with population as vast and diverse as ours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut our presidential federalism has bred a system where revenue is excessively domiciled at the centre rather than in the states or regions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch hypothetical scenario can only breed dire economic prospects for the family and should ordinarily push its hard-pressed members to take some swift and critical actions to improve their precarious financial state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe challenge, as we have seen, is finding the will and having the capacity to do so\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis briefly summarizes our turnaround tale in Enugu State in roughly nine months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe single boldest projection that encapsulates what we intend to accomplish is our target to grow the economy of Enugu State seven-fold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimply put, our vision is to grow the state\u2019s GDP from $4.4bn \u2013 that we met \u2013 to at least $30bn in the next four to eight years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother bold plan is the commitment to attain a zero per cent poverty headcount index in Enugu State,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor emphasised the importance of visionary leaders who can translate dreams into reality, despite the widespread demand for leaders with transcendental values.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/03\/01\/why-enugu-is-experiencing-water-scarcity-mbah\/\"><strong>Mbah<\/strong><\/a> added that the comprehensive plan to turn the state&#8217;s fortunes around included the administration&#8217;s significant investments in the fields of agriculture, water, health, and education in addition to security.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The governor emphasised the importance of visionary leaders who can translate dreams into reality, despite the widespread demand for leaders with transcendental values.
