{"id":315025,"date":"2024-03-18T10:43:38","date_gmt":"2024-03-18T09:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=315025"},"modified":"2024-03-18T10:43:38","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T09:43:38","slug":"budget-padding-peter-obi-seeks-immediate-review-of-2024-budget-laments-parlous-state-of-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/03\/18\/budget-padding-peter-obi-seeks-immediate-review-of-2024-budget-laments-parlous-state-of-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Budget padding: Peter Obi seeks immediate review of 2024 budget \u2013 laments parlous state of Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong> He admonished that the nation\u2019s resources should be thoughtfully channeled to critical and productive areas<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 presidential election, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/03\/12\/peter-obi-not-the-politician-nigeria-need-says-lagos-lp-guber-candidate-vivour-rhodes\/\">Peter Obi<\/a>, has lamented the parlous and precarious state of the nation.<\/p>\n<p>Obi, who harped on judicious use of the country&#8217;s resources, called for a total review of the 2024 budget amid allegations of untraceable N3.7 trillion in the budget.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on his official X handle on Monday, Obi bemoaned widespread insecurity in the country.<\/p>\n<p>He admonished that the nation\u2019s resources should be thoughtfully channeled to critical and productive areas like security, fighting poverty and solving the challenges of hunger and food insecurity, power supply, considering the current economic situation of the country.<\/p>\n<p>He also condemned the recent spate of violent crimes and killings occurring in every part of the country, stating that the increased crime rate has made Nigeria one of the world\u2019s riskiest countries to live in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past 1 year, about 7000 Nigerians have been kidnapped, with about 700 kidnapped in the last 3 weeks, notwithstanding the violent crimes and killings that occur in every part of the nation, which must have included us in one of the world\u2019s riskiest countries to live in,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The former Anambra governor further expressed concern about the high cost of food and the epileptic power supply in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have become one of the hungriest nations in the world and one of the most difficult nations in the world to live in, with food prices constantly going out of the reach of most Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPower supply is abysmally poor and Nigerians are now mostly in total darkness,as over 60% are without power supply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven those in perceived privileged areas now go for days without power supply\u201d, he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>He however, urged the executive and legislative arms to consider the many challenges facing the nation and re-allocate resources to these very critical areas<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>He admonished that the nation\u2019s resources should be thoughtfully channeled to critical and productive areas Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi, has lamented the parlous and precarious state of the nation.
