{"id":316002,"date":"2024-03-25T07:04:49","date_gmt":"2024-03-25T06:04:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=316002"},"modified":"2024-03-25T07:04:49","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T06:04:49","slug":"why-students-died-during-palliative-distribution-stampede-nasarawa-gov-sule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/03\/25\/why-students-died-during-palliative-distribution-stampede-nasarawa-gov-sule\/","title":{"rendered":"Why students died during palliative distribution stampede \u2013 Nasarawa gov, Sule"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The governor, who said the death of the students was regrettable, stated that the incident was not due to negligence of the state\u2019s officials<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has cleared the air on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/03\/22\/nasarawa-university-students-feared-dead-in-food-warehouse-stampede\/\">death of Nasarawa State University students<\/a> during a palliative distribution stampede in the school.<\/p>\n<p>The governor, who said the death of the students was regrettable, stated that the incident was not due to negligence of the state\u2019s officials.<\/p>\n<p>Sule said this in reaction to comments by human rights activist Femi Falana who blamed the deaths of the two students on \u201cofficial negligence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during an interview on Channels Television\u2019s Sunday Politics, Sule said the unfortunate incident was not as a result of negligence or poor planning on the part of the government.<\/p>\n<p>The governor had reportedly ordered the distribution of two 7.5 kg bags of rice and N5,000 to each student of the state university in Keffi, the state capital.<\/p>\n<p>Two students \u2014 Grace Danladi and Rose Micheal \u2014 died in last Friday\u2019s unfortunate incident, while others were injured during the stampede ahead of the distribution of palliatives to students of the school.<\/p>\n<p>However, Sule said, \u201cIt\u2019s very unfortunate that it happened but it had nothing to do with any planning, it has nothing to do with any negligence. We have been to eight places. It was the last place, which would have been the ninth institution that we went. So, all these other places that we went, everything went so smooth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the stampede was not because of planning but some students thought that their names were being replaced by the Students\u2019 Union Government of the institution, hence, the anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very sad that two students died. We are talking with the families. So, for somebody to politicise it? It\u2019s unfortunate that we are in a country where everybody looks at a tragedy and politicise it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the process, they (students), overpowered the security and God so kind, the security did not open fire on anybody. So, it\u2019s not like anybody was shot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was during the stampede that happened, may be, these two students fell and other students marched on them. So, who are you going to look for compensation from?
