{"id":317778,"date":"2024-04-06T22:35:37","date_gmt":"2024-04-06T21:35:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=317778"},"modified":"2024-04-06T22:35:37","modified_gmt":"2024-04-06T21:35:37","slug":"fg-plans-new-national-id-card-with-payment-social-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/04\/06\/fg-plans-new-national-id-card-with-payment-social-features\/","title":{"rendered":"FG plans new national ID card with payment, social features"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The new card will be powered by AfriGO, a national domestic card scheme<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Federal Government, through the National Identity Management Commission, will unveil an enhanced National Identity card layered with payment capabilities and social service features.<\/p>\n<p>This new card, developed in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System, will be powered by AfriGO, a national domestic card scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The Head of Corporate Communications of NIMC, Kayode Adegoke, announced this in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The national ID card, fortified with verifiable National Identity features, is supported by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, which mandates the enrollment and issuance of a general multipurpose card to Nigerians and legal residents.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/04\/01\/nimc-lists-fees-for-correcting-nin-biodata-on-mobile-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commission<\/a> said the initiative aims to meet the demand for physical identification, enabling cardholders to verify their identity and access both government and private social services.<\/p>\n<p>The national ID card will promote financial inclusion, empower citizens, and foster increased participation in nation-building endeavours.<\/p>\n<p>According to NIMC, only registered citizens and legal residents with the National Identification Number will be eligible to request the card<\/p>\n<p>The statement read, \u201cThe card, which will be produced according to ICAO standards, is positioned as the country\u2019s default national identity card.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to this functionality, cardholders will also be able to use the cards as debit or prepaid cards by linking the same to bank accounts of their choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe card shall enable eligible persons, especially those financially excluded from social and financial services, to have access to multiple government intervention programmes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn line with data protection regulation and public interest, NIMC remains committed to protecting cardholders\u2019 personal data and will ensure compliance with international standards on data security protocols as security features that protect the confidentiality and safety of users\u2019 information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other features of the card include a machine-readable zone in conformation with ICAO for e-passport information, identity card Issue date and document number in line with ICAO standards, travel, health insurance information, microloans, agriculture, food stamps, transport, and energy subsidies, etc.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The new card will be powered by AfriGO, a national domestic card scheme The Federal Government, through the National Identity Management Commission, will unveil an enhanced National Identity card layered with payment capabilities and social service features.
