{"id":317958,"date":"2024-04-08T10:35:14","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T09:35:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=317958"},"modified":"2024-04-08T10:35:14","modified_gmt":"2024-04-08T09:35:14","slug":"breaking-court-remands-binance-executive-in-abuja-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/04\/08\/breaking-court-remands-binance-executive-in-abuja-prison\/","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: Court remands Binance executive in Abuja prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Judge subsequently adjourned the matter till April 18 for the ruling on his bail application and May 2 for commencement of trial<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A Federal High Court in Abuja has remanded a Binance executive, Tigran Gambaryan, in Kuje Correctional Centre, pending the determination of his bail application.<\/p>\n<p>The trial judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, gave the order after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/04\/04\/arraignment-of-binance-executive-stalled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gambaryan<\/a> pleaded not guilty to the money laundering charges preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The judge subsequently adjourned the matter till April 18 for the ruling on his bail application and May 2 for commencement of trial.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Yuki, wife of Tigran Gambaryan has called for the release of her husband.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to the Nigerian government, Yuki said Gambaryan is \u201cinnocent\u201d and should be allowed to come home.<\/p>\n<p>Yuki said Gambaryan is first and foremost an incredible father, loving husband, and supportive friend to everyone who meets him.<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u201cHe has a deep respect for Nigeria and its people, and in fact, he had expressed excitement to me at the prospect of starting to work in your country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand and respect your decision to scrutinize his employer, Binance. I realize that this whole situation has arisen from your commitment to your country and its citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, Tigran is merely an employee. He does not have authority over Binance\u2019s corporate decisions or policies that might have impacted Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe spends his workday investigating and pursuing criminal activity on the platform. His very job is to help governments, like yours, prosecute and prevent illicit activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadly, any influence he might have had at Binance to help the company leaders understand your position in this disagreement is trapped in that cell with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to her, Tigran is globally recognised for his significant contributions to solving crimes involving cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know many of his peers, including in Nigeria, would say that Tigran\u2019s continuous efforts not only decrease illicit activity on Binance\u2019s platform but for all cryptocurrencies across the world,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about their family, Yuki said she and her husband have two young children and this is the longest the Binance executive has been away from them. and \u201cthey don\u2019t understand why he hasn\u2019t come home to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey ask me every day when he will be coming home, and still I cannot give them an answer. This week is going to be especially difficult as it is our youngest\u2019s 5th birthday on Friday. I never imagined Tigran would not be here with us to celebrate it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile, his ageing mother spends her days in tears, praying for the safe return of her only son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe raised Tigran almost all on her own. He is her everything, the thought of him being in a country so far away from her and in these circumstances is beyond devastating to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA small part of me chips away every day without Tigran by my side.
