{"id":320138,"date":"2024-04-23T17:38:18","date_gmt":"2024-04-23T16:38:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=320138"},"modified":"2024-04-23T17:38:18","modified_gmt":"2024-04-23T16:38:18","slug":"just-in-ill-resign-if-yahaya-bello-is-not-prosecuted-efcc-chairman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/04\/23\/just-in-ill-resign-if-yahaya-bello-is-not-prosecuted-efcc-chairman\/","title":{"rendered":"JUST-IN: I&#8217;ll Resign If Yahaya Bello Is Not Prosecuted &#8211; EFCC Chairman"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The EFCC is seeking to arraign Bello on 19 counts bordering on alleged money laundering, breach of trust and misappropriation of funds to the tune of N80.2 billion.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Olukoyede vowed that all those who obstructed the arrest of the former governor would be brought to book<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has vowed to follow the prosecution of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, to logical conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Olukoyede disclosed this on Tuesday during an interactive session with media executives in Abuja<\/p>\n<p>The anti-graft chairman sworn that he would resign as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/12\/07\/olukoyede-never-said-seven-of-10-nigerian-students-are-criminals-efcc\/\"><strong>EFCC chairman<\/strong><\/a> if Bello is not prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p>The EFCC boss said; \u201cI called Yahaya Bello, as a serving governor, to come to my office to clear himself. I shouldn\u2019t have done that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he said because a certain senator has planted over 100 journalists in my office, he would not come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him that he would be allowed to use my private gate to give him a cover, but he said my men should come to his village to interrogate him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olukoyede said the EFCC did not violate any law while trying to arrest the former governor from his residence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather, we have obeyed the law. I inherited the case and I didn\u2019t create it. Why has he not submitted himself to the law?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have arraigned two past governors who have been granted bail now \u2014 Willie Obiano and Abdulfatah Ahmed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EFCC chairman promised that anyone responsible for impeding Bello&#8217;s arrest from his home in Abuja will suffer the full force of the law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would have gone after him since January but we waited for the court order,\u201d Olukoyede said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs early as 7 am, my men were there. Over 50 of them. They mounted surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe met over 30 armed policemen there. We would have exchanged fire and there would have been casualties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy men were about to move in when the governor of Kogi drove in and they later changed the narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He vowed that all those who have dipped their hands into the nation\u2019s coffers would be investigated and prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I can do Obiano, Abdulfatah Ahmed and Chief Olu Agunloye, my kinsman, why not Yahaya Bello?\u201d Olukoyede concluded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The EFCC is seeking to arraign Bello on 19 counts bordering on alleged money laundering, breach of trust and misappropriation of funds to the tune of N80.2 billion.
