{"id":322416,"date":"2024-05-11T08:42:16","date_gmt":"2024-05-11T07:42:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=322416"},"modified":"2024-05-11T08:42:16","modified_gmt":"2024-05-11T07:42:16","slug":"daniel-ojukwu-has-a-case-to-answer-police-speaks-on-arrest-of-fij-reporter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/05\/11\/daniel-ojukwu-has-a-case-to-answer-police-speaks-on-arrest-of-fij-reporter\/","title":{"rendered":"Daniel Ojukwu Has A Case To Answer; Police Speaks On Arrest Of FIJ Reporter"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The police force public relations officer, said Ojukwu\u2019s release had nothing to do with the protest by CSOs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><b>He reiterated that Ojukwu was arrested based on alleged violation of the cybercrime act.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has said that the arrest of Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), was conducted in strict adherence to legal protocol.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/05\/04\/police-arrest-fij-reporter-daniel-ojukwu\/\"><strong>Ojukwu<\/strong><\/a> went missing on May 1 and could not be reached by family and friends for three days.<\/p>\n<p>The journalist\u2019s arrest and detention sparked outrage, amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/05\/04\/cwppf-ipi-condemn-detention-of-fij-journalist\/\"><strong>calls for his release<\/strong><\/a> on social media platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Activists and a coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/05\/06\/actionaid-condemns-arrest-of-fij-journalist-calls-for-release\/\"><strong>protested<\/strong><\/a> Ojukwu\u2019s incarceration at the police headquarters in Abuja on May 9.<\/p>\n<p>He was subsequently released by the police on May 10 after he had spent nine days in their custody.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, police force public relations officer, said Ojukwu\u2019s release had nothing to do with the protest by CSOs.<\/p>\n<p>Adejobi reiterated that Ojukwu was arrested based on alleged violation of the cybercrime act.<\/p>\n<p>The statement reads; \u201cThe Nigeria Police Force hereby addresses recent developments regarding the arrest and investigation of Mr. Daniel Ojukwu, reiterating that contrary to speculative reports, Mr. Ojukwu\u2019s investigation is in strict compliance with legal protocols and procedures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Ojukwu was lawfully apprehended and detained pursuant to a valid remand warrant issued by a competent court of justice on May 2nd 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis initial detention in Lagos and subsequent transfer to Abuja by the FCID-National Cybercrime Centre (NCCC) aligns with standard investigative procedures undertaken by police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe detention of Mr. Ojukwu is linked to allegations of violating provisions of the Cybercrime Act, and other extant laws pertaining to cyber related crimes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese allegations stem from a report concerning financial transactions and contract execution upon which he was petitioned to the Nigeria Police for investigations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith our preliminary forensic investigation, and recovery of some contents generated by the suspect, Mr. Ojukwu has a case to answer and as such will be arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The police added that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/05\/10\/fijs-reporter-released-from-10-days-in-police-custody\/\"><strong> Ojukwu was released<\/strong><\/a> after bail conditions were met.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the same vein, the Police did not deny Mr. Ojukwu bail, as it was predicated on him meeting the conditions set for the bail,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has however been released upon providing a reliable surety today Friday 10th May, 2024, pending the commencement of prosecution at the Federal High Court which has jurisdiction over cyber related crimes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is instructive to note that his release has no correlation with the unwarranted protest held at the Police Headquarters on 9th May, 2024, but strictly due to him meeting the bail requirements and the policy of the Force on being rule of law compliant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its duty to maintain law and order, uphold justice, and safeguard the rights of all citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge the public and media outlets to refrain from speculations and undue media trial in order to avoid jeopardizing the legal procedures in the case.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The police force public relations officer, said Ojukwu\u2019s release had nothing to do with the protest by CSOs.
