{"id":322780,"date":"2024-05-14T10:46:56","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T09:46:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=322780"},"modified":"2024-05-14T10:46:56","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T09:46:56","slug":"interest-rates-will-remain-high-to-check-inflation-cbn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/05\/14\/interest-rates-will-remain-high-to-check-inflation-cbn\/","title":{"rendered":"Interest rates will remain high to check inflation \u2013 CBN"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>Cardoso said that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which he chairs, would do whatever is needed to tame surging inflation including implementation of orthodox policies<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/05\/13\/imf-raises-concern-over-nigerian-government-move-to-weaken-cbns-independence\/\">Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)<\/a> says it will retain high interest rate to curb the country&#8217;s galloping inflation.<\/p>\n<p>The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, made this known in an interview with the the Financial Times on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Inflation in Nigeria remains precariously high at 33.2 per cent, the highest in three decades, while food inflation is higher still at 40 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the interview, Cardoso said that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which he chairs, would do whatever is needed to tame surging inflation including implementation of orthodox policies<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is every indication that the MPC would do whatever is necessary. They will continue to do what has to be done to ensure that inflation comes down,\u201d Cardoso said, ahead of the committee\u2019s meeting on May 20 and 21.<\/p>\n<p>Cardoso\u2019s position is explicitly different from that of his predecessor Godwin Emefiele, who oversaw an inflation crisis in Nigeria as the central bank regularly printed money to fund government deficits beyond the 5 per cent limit permitted by law.<\/p>\n<p>He stated: \u201cLet\u2019s face it: for a long period, the CBN did not embrace orthodox monetary policies. We want to go back to using an orthodox method, and it will take us to where we want to go. The apex bank has been reoriented to focus on price and monetary stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the monetary policy rate was hiked by 400 and 200 basis points in February and March respectively, which lifted the key lending rate to 24.75 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the fluctuating value of the naira against the US dollar, Cardoso said the situation had now stabilised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestors had previously tended to head for the window in response to currency fluctuations. But now, there had been a fundamental shift.
