{"id":324841,"date":"2024-05-27T13:30:30","date_gmt":"2024-05-27T12:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=324841"},"modified":"2024-05-27T13:30:30","modified_gmt":"2024-05-27T12:30:30","slug":"yiaga-to-monitor-south-africa-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/05\/27\/yiaga-to-monitor-south-africa-polls\/","title":{"rendered":"Yiaga to monitor South Africa Polls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yiaga Africa, a civil society organisation (CSO), says it has deployed an election study mission to South Africa to monitor the national and provincial elections.<\/p>\n<p>The election is scheduled for May 29, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Sunday, Samson Itodo, executive director of Yiaga Africa,\u00a0said this followed accreditation by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).<\/p>\n<p>Itodo said that the mission is part of the Yiaga Africa Transforming Electoral Governance in Africa (TEGA) initiative<\/p>\n<p>He said TEGA aims to enhance electoral governance through evidence-based learning, documentation, and advocacy.<\/p>\n<p>Itodo added that through TEGA, Yiaga Africa conducts election study missions, policy roundtables, and participatory action research on elections and electoral reforms to strengthen democratic societies and institutions, and counter democratic backsliding in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The executive director said a joint mission with the University of Pretoria and Center for Human Rights will be deployed to analyze South Africa&#8217;s electoral governance structure in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This includes election results management, electoral technology, and the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to safeguard election and information integrity,&#8221; Itodo said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Additionally, the mission will study the legal and administrative mechanisms protecting citizens\u2019 right to vote, such as special voting, out-of-country voting, and prisoners\u2019 voting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will also assess the impact of issue-based politics on political competition as the country commemorates 30 years of democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Itodo added that the mission comprised of seasoned election experts from African electoral commissions, national parliaments, civil society, media, and international organizations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The members include; Mrs. Davidetta Browne Lansanah, Chairperson, National Electoral Commission (NEC) Liberia; Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, Chairman, Nigerian Senate Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters, National Assembly; Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar\u2019adua, Deputy Chairman, Nigerian Senate Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters, National Assembly; Hon. Prince Adebayo Balogun, Chairman, Nigerian House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, National Assembly; Hon.
