{"id":32710,"date":"2021-05-12T07:02:30","date_gmt":"2021-05-12T06:02:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=32710"},"modified":"2021-05-12T07:02:30","modified_gmt":"2021-05-12T06:02:30","slug":"public-hearing-on-proposed-constitution-review-to-commence-may-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/12\/public-hearing-on-proposed-constitution-review-to-commence-may-26\/","title":{"rendered":"Public hearing on proposed constitution review to commence May 26"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chairman of the senate committee on constitution review, Ovie Omo-Agege has stated that the zonal public hearing on the proposed review of the 1999 constitution will begin on May 26.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a statement releases by Yomi Odunuga, spokesman to Omo-Agege.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy senate president disclosed this when he hosted members of the Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEPAD) in his office on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that the public hearing will end on May 27, and hold in 12 states across the country, Omo-Agege, who is also deputy senate president, said there will be two hearings for each geopolitical zone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Deputy President of the Senate pointed out that while Jos and Minna would host the public hearings in the North Central Geopolitical Zone, that of North East and North West would hold in Bauchi and Gombe as well as Kaduna and Sokoto respectively,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimilarly, that of South East would hold in Owerri and Enugu, even as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/11\/buhari-holds-security-meeting-with-service-chiefs-approves-new-security-measures-in-south-east-south-south\/\">South-South<\/a> and South West would be hosted in Port Harcourt and Asaba as well as Akure and Lagos respectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Represented by Otive Igbuzor, his chief of staff, Omo-Agege gave the assurance that women\u2019s interests will be protected, and urged Nigerians to participate actively during the public hearing.<\/p>\n<p>He added that a national public hearing is also expected to hold in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the senate constitution review committee was inaugurated in February 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the inauguration of the committee, Omo-Agege had said recommendations of the 2014 national conference, and the resolutions of the All Progressives Congress (APC) panel on restructuring will be considered.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy senate president had also said the committee will consider altering the sixth schedule of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/05\/03\/senator-calls-for-the-removal-of-exclusive-list-from-constitution\/\">constitution<\/a> to provide for the establishment of pre-election matters tribunal, governorship pre-election matters tribunals, and presidential pre-election matters tribunal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chairman of the senate committee on constitution review, Ovie Omo-Agege has stated that the zonal public hearing on the proposed review of the 1999 constitution will begin on May 26.
