{"id":328006,"date":"2024-06-21T15:52:16","date_gmt":"2024-06-21T14:52:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=328006"},"modified":"2024-06-21T15:52:16","modified_gmt":"2024-06-21T14:52:16","slug":"anambra-fake-lawyer-jailed-for-impersonation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/06\/21\/anambra-fake-lawyer-jailed-for-impersonation\/","title":{"rendered":"Anambra fake lawyer jailed for impersonation"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>He was sentenced to 90 days imprisonment by the state High Court sitting at Otuocha located in Anambra East Local Government<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/06\/19\/gunmen-kill-22-year-old-newlywed-bride-in-anambra-attack\/\">Anambra State<\/a>, one Obinna Oraezue has been jailed for impersonating as a lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>He was sentenced to 90 days imprisonment by the state High Court sitting at Otuocha located in Anambra East Local Government.<\/p>\n<p>Oraezue was remanded at the Onitsha Correctional Centre in Onitsha with hard labour, for contempt of court.<\/p>\n<p>He was said to have been arrested at a High Court in Otuocha, a few weeks ago, for showing up in court and posing as a lawyer when he clearly isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>A viral video on social media recently showed the suspect being questioned by presiding the judge of the court, Justice Okechukwu Onunkwo, during court proceedings and subsequently handed over to security operatives.<\/p>\n<p>The judge, while sentencing him, also referred the case of M.T. Olisaeke Law firm that hired the \u201ccontemptor\u201d as a \u201cjunior lawyer\u201d without proper checks to the Onitsha branch of the Nigeria Bar Association for investigation and disciplinary actions.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ccontemptor\u201d dressed in full regalia of a legal practitioner, had on June 13, 2024, appeared in the court for a litigant in a land dispute, but could not refer to the basic tenets of the profession.<\/p>\n<p>This raised suspicions among lawyers in the court; including the judge, leading to his interrogation and subsequent arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Upon interrogation by the presiding judge, Justice Onunkwo, during his arraignment, the \u201ccontemptor\u201d confessed that he studied Political Science at the university; not Law, but that he had a passion for legal practice.<\/p>\n<p>He further explained that he had just spent about a month in the law firm that hired him, and that he had never represented anyone in any of the Nigerian courts in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Pleading for forgiveness and clemency of the court, Oraezue noted that it was the economic hardship in the country that pushed him into the act; after he had worked as a contract employee with the Onitsha South Local Government Area.<\/p>\n<p>He added that he has five children and an unemployed wife to take care of.<\/p>\n<p>In his judgement, Justice Onunkwo slammed the \u201ccontemptor\u201d with a three-month sentence; with hard labour, with effect from June 13, 2024, when he was arrested.<\/p>\n<p>The judge said the sentence was soft because the court took into account the \u201ccontemptor\u2019s\u201d pleas, adding, however, that the sentence should serve as a deterrent to others who may wish to indulge in such ignoble act.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the matter after the judgement, a legal practitioner, Uzochukwu Ozumba, said the court was lenient enough because the contemptor had shown remorse, and advised others who might wish to toe such a path to run away, as the court might not be that lenient in future.<\/p>\n<p>The state NBA expressed satisfaction over the sentencing, adding that it would serve as a deterrent to others who might have the intention to commit such act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a good development.
