{"id":328039,"date":"2024-06-21T20:12:48","date_gmt":"2024-06-21T19:12:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=328039"},"modified":"2024-06-21T20:12:48","modified_gmt":"2024-06-21T19:12:48","slug":"uk-richest-family-jailed-for-exploiting-domestic-staff-in-switzerland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/06\/21\/uk-richest-family-jailed-for-exploiting-domestic-staff-in-switzerland\/","title":{"rendered":"UK richest family jailed for exploiting domestic staff in\u00a0Switzerland"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The prosecution decided to pursue the case due to the gravity of the charges<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>On Friday, a Swiss court sentenced four members of Britain&#8217;s richest family to jail for exploiting Indian staff at their Geneva mansion.<\/p>\n<p>The Hindujas, who were not in court, were acquitted of human trafficking but convicted on other charges in a stunning verdict for the family, whose fortune is estimated to be worth 37 billion pounds ($47 billion).<\/p>\n<p>The presiding judge in Geneva sentenced Prakash Hinduja and his wife Kamal Hinduja to four years and six months in prison each, while their son Ajay and his wife Namrata received four-year sentences.<\/p>\n<p>The cases stem from the family&#8217;s practice of bringing servants from their native India, and included allegations of confiscating their passports once they were flown to Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors argued the Hindujas paid their staff a pittance and gave them little freedom to leave the house.<\/p>\n<p>The family denied the allegations, claiming the prosecutors wanted to \u201cdo in the Hindujas\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Hindujas reached a confidential out-of-court settlement with the three employees who made the accusations against them.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, the prosecution decided to pursue the case due to the gravity of the charges.<\/p>\n<p>Geneva prosecutor Yves Bertossa had requested a custodial sentence of five and a half years against Prakash and Kamal Hinduja.<\/p>\n<p>Aged 78 and 75 respectively, both had been absent since the start of the trial for health reasons.<\/p>\n<p>In his closing address, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/28\/malawian-university-revokes-womans-degree-after-she-set-certificate-ablaze-in-viral-video\/\">prosecutor<\/a> accused the family of abusing the \u201casymmetrical situation\u201d between powerful employer and vulnerable employee to save money.<\/p>\n<p>Household staff were paid a salary between 220 and 400 francs ($250-450) a month, far below what they could expect to earn in Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>But the Hinduja family\u2019s defence lawyers argued that the three plaintiffs received ample benefits, were not kept in isolation and were free to leave the villa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not dealing with mistreated slaves,\u201d Nicolas Jeandin told the court.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the employees \u201cwere grateful to the Hindujas for offering them a better life\u201d, his fellow lawyer Robert Assael argued.<\/p>\n<p>Representing Ajay Hinduja, lawyer Yael Hayat had slammed the \u201cexcessive\u201d indictment, arguing the trial should be a question of \u201cjustice, not social justice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Namrata Hinduja\u2019s lawyer Romain Jordan also pleaded for acquittal, claiming the prosecutors were aiming to make an example of the family.<\/p>\n<p>He argued the prosecution had failed to mention payments made to staff on top of their cash salaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo employee was cheated out of his or her salary,\u201d Assael added.<\/p>\n<p>Some staff even asked for raises, which they received.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The prosecution decided to pursue the case due to the gravity of the charges On Friday, a Swiss court sentenced four members of Britain&#8217;s richest family to jail for exploiting Indian staff at their Geneva mansion.
