{"id":331352,"date":"2024-07-17T12:14:55","date_gmt":"2024-07-17T11:14:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=331352"},"modified":"2024-07-17T12:14:55","modified_gmt":"2024-07-17T11:14:55","slug":"n82bn-fraud-charges-again-yahaya-bello-refuses-to-appear-in-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/07\/17\/n82bn-fraud-charges-again-yahaya-bello-refuses-to-appear-in-court\/","title":{"rendered":"N82bn fraud charges: Again, Yahaya Bello refuses to appear in court"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>The embattled ex governor on Wednesday refused to honour court summons in the N82 billion alleged fraud charges brought against him by the federal government.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Former governor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2024\/07\/12\/kogi-guber-sdp-candidate-ajaka-heads-to-supreme-court\/\">Kogi State<\/a>, Yahaya Adoza Bello, has again failed to show up at the Federal High Court in Abuja for his trial.<\/p>\n<p>The embattled ex governor on Wednesday refused to honour court summons in the N82 billion alleged fraud charges brought against him by the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>Bello was expected to be arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite this morning, but at the time of this report, there were no traces of his presence either in the courtroom or within the court premises.<\/p>\n<p>However, his two lawyers, Mohammed Aliyu and Adeola Adedipe, both Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN), have arrived in court in compliance with the court\u2019s order.<\/p>\n<p>The two senior lawyers are expected to answer questions on their undertaking to produce the former governor in court for arraignment.<\/p>\n<p>This is the sixth time Bello will be ignoring court summons. The last adjournment, he sought the transfer of his trial on the alleged crime to Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.<\/p>\n<p>He said that he preferred to be arraigned in Lokoja, where he claimed that the court ordinarily has territorial jurisdiction and where the alleged offense was committed.<\/p>\n<p>His request, made through a letter to the Chief Judge of the court, Justice John Tsoho, was turned down, and he was directed to make the request in open court as required by law.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have stormed the court to witness today\u2019s proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>Also in the court is a team from the media department of the EFCC led by Mr. Dele Oyewale, the Head of the media department<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The embattled ex governor on Wednesday refused to honour court summons in the N82 billion alleged fraud charges brought against him by the federal government.
